He did somewhat, but my guess is that with Johnson being 39 at the time, his team figured that he would be no problem as Johnson had a few unspectacular fights leading up to that one and would've shown his age. But after the fight, he showed that he wanted nothing to do with him.
I did not feel Johnson had won the fight. He was getting smacked around the ring for the most part. Sure he had Dawson hurt badly at times but that doesn't erase the fact that Dawson fist were sparking and ricocheting off of Johnson head throughout the fight. Johnson does a lot of :|
Here's a poll where 55% said Dawson won; http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=97841&highlight=Dawson+Johnson Also, 3 judges, 3 press row scorers, and 2 announcers scored that fight for Showtime. Not one of them had Johnson winning. 2 had it a draw and 6 had it for Dawson. I guess the media and Showtime announcers have it out fro Johnson as well.
He didn't let nothing slip away,Branco did something in 3 of the middle rounds and in the rest he did NOTHING.He lost at least 8 rounds(if not more),that was a disgraceful robbery seen by the italians themselves.....the commentators I noticed greeted the decision with the expresion ''puto vero'' which I think means ''true bull****''.That was the definition of gift decision.Branco lost that fight pretty wide.
It was a horrid fight though, Johnson-Branco. Late on, if Branco was doing NOTHING, Johnson wasn't landing particularly much. Johnson was sharp in the first 4 or 5. Then he lost his way. Branco started moving and outjabbing him. Johnson was off balance and plodding. The final third became a maul. Branco is hard to hit clean and Johnson was missing, smothering his own work. Maybe on effort you give the final 1/3 of rds to Johnson but he wasn't particularly effective. It was one of those fights that was so poor in quality. It was disappointing cos Johnson was boxing so well early and then to look so sloppy and tired in the 2nd half. Maybe I was hard on him due to the decline in quality of his work later in the fight. But I wasn't bothered that Johnson lost that fight. I also don't feel Johnson v Woods 1 was a bad decision (the draw). Johnson seemed to me 3 up after 11 as he backe dup Woods all the way in hard fought exchanges. Then he gets dropped in rd 12 (though ref doesn't acknowledge, doesn't give a count, incorrectly calls a slip) AND wobbled. A 10-8 rd against Johnson IMO, so i would have had Johnson only 1 up at the end of the 1st Woods fight. Johnson was defiitely robbed vs Julio Gonzalez and Daniel Judah 1st fight. Merqui Sosa gave him abit of a beating. Harmon outboxed a tired looking (again) Johnson.
Agree to disagree with you boys then. But why then did the commentators(who were italian) had Branco clearly up(don't know how much cuz I don't understand italian excellent)? Why was Branco jr, trying to calm the crowd down aftr the fight? And why the hell was Silvio almost linched and booed off the ring by his own people?:rofl
Johnson lost to Dawson in a close fight...I dont get why some of you guys are calling this a robbery when Dawson did more than enough to pull out a hard fought victory.
i had johnson edging it a lot of chads combos werent even landing and johnson did a very good job taking shots on the gloves and landing the more meaningful shots.
Also, look at their faces. Johnson had no scars or bruises on his face. Dawson looked like he was in a battle.
its easy to score for a guy like dawson whose throwing the eye catching flashy combos but take a closer look not many were landing and i agree as you say johnson came out unscathed which was odd considering dawson head hunted slightly too much in this fight
