Mickey Goodwin, the Downriver boxer who became Kronks first star, was found bludgeoned to death in his home Tuesday, according to Melvindale Police. Goodwins body was discovered about 5 p.m. at the house on Ruth Street in Melvindale he shared with his mother, said Lt. Keith Guyot. Goodwins mother was not home at the time. Officers went to check on Goodwin, 50, after being told that he had not shown up for work at the River Rouge gym where he trained boxers. Police declined to release other details, but asked anyone with leads to call 313-429-1070. Trained by Emanuel Steward, Goodwin won the Golden Gloves title in 1975 and turned professional two years later. Goodwin (40-2-1, 28 KOs) and Thomas Hearns became Kronks KO Twins, but it was the young Goodwin, with his Beatle haircut and good looks, who stole the show. Steward remembered a youngster from Melvindale coming into Detroit, taking off his shirt and knocking out one of Stewards experienced Kronk fighters. He just kept turning up and knocking guys out, Steward said. Mickey was the big attraction at first at Olympia and around Detroit, not Tommy. Steward said he had spoken recently to Goodwin about coming over to Mickey Goodwins River Rouge Boxing Club on Jefferson to look at a young heavyweight he was training. Im just shocked, Steward said. He was getting his life together. When he was boxing, he had all the Downriver people following him. Mickey was a star. Goodwin, however, never won a championship belt. After a draw and a loss in 1985, he went eight years before his next fight. His last came Nov. 29, 1994, when he beat Jamie Stevenson on points in Royal Oak. Referee Frank Garza officiated several of Goodwins fights. Garza, who lives in Lincoln Park, had spoken to Goodwin on Monday about a TV or radio boxing show Goodwin had in mind.
A star? No wonder he never won a world title...look at his record. His competition was terrible. A guy that was 42-2 who spent his whole career fighting guys with records like 2-24. He doesnt have one recognizable name on his 45 fight resume. A shame no less when this kin dof thing happens to anyone. I was just really surprised by his record compared to how manny steward and others spoke of him.
Yeah, maybe leaving it a week or so and making a post in the Classic section would be a better idea than ripping apart his record while quoting his obitury.
I also mentioned the fact that it was a tragedy that it happened. I wasnt being a dick about it, just said i was surprised when i looked at his record by the way they were talking about him. Not to mention he was a boxer and this is (surprise) a boxing website...so its perfectly fine to discuss the mans life and what he was known for. If you want to have a discussion on sympathies about him being murdered (which again is tragic and sad) start a thread for it. So step down off the high horse captain morality and settle the **** down.
His record shows that he was never really serious about boxing to the same degree that Hearns or even Andy Lee was. A LOT of Kronk fighters are/were involved in crime, drugs and teh thug life. He was murdered? Wonder why...
manny is just being manny...yeah he was the star and not tommy thats why nobody ever heard of this guy lmao
