There are some really bizarre choices for "elite fighters" going on in this thread...

Considering his size, he was supposed to.

Juan Diaz is a very good fighter but is he good enough to be called "elite"? Do we have a standard for evaluating whether a boxer qualifies as "elite"?

I don't think so too that's why I asked if there's a certain criteria or standard for a boxer to qualify as elite. Juan Diaz is a very good fighter but I think he is not on the same level with the so-called elites of FW/SFW... JMM, Barrera, Morales and Pac.

  12. "To an extent"?

Were there a couple of elite fighters watching Calzaghe Vs Kessler from ringside or something?

Kessler = the guy who gave Calzaghe a tough fight
Calzaghe = the guy who defeated Kessler

    = two very good fighters

Actually not a terrible comparison between Juan Diaz and Joe Calzaghe. Both throw a lot of punches. Both are not tough to hit for an exceptional athlete. If Diaz doesn't fight cans for eight years (hiding in a mountain with a bogus belt) and is instead forced to fight the best, it seems clear that he will have a short career and won't be boxing into his mid-30s. Same would have happened to Joe. Fought Eubank in '97 and showed he was easy to hit as he caught punches with his face for 12 rounds. If Joe had had to go from the equivalent of a Campbell, to a Marquez, to a Pacquaio, etc. he would never have been pristine in 2006. 43 year old Hopkins dropped Joe easily. 40 year old RJJ dropped Joe easily. Joe didn't have a great chin, he had a chin that didn't get hit all that much because his opponents were all C-B level fighters or non-elite athletes who weren't defensively or offensively very skillful. With a lesser opponent, Diaz sets the pace and is too active for the other to really test his chin as they are too busy protecting their own (to expose his deficiencies or suspect punch resistance).
