    Sai...

A great story.. A terrible ending.

Johnny Owens 'mirrors' many other men, who reached the heights, only to lose 'grip' when close to consolidating themselves on the mantle.

true flamengo, a good read but a sad one too. poor fella never hit the canvas and when he finally did, it killed him. seems nothing could hold him down bar his own physical fault which he knew nothing of.

The Piano man is certainly the man...went 'uptown' of course was a hint ie Uptown Girl (his song about then girlfriend Christie Brinkley).

Wish I'd been on for the Johnny Owen question...a sad story that I know well.

IMPORTANT: There was a 3 or 4 part video download on-line a year or two ago called 'The Match Stick Man' (surely it's still there) and it follows the Owen story from footage of the tragic bout to well beyond his death. Includes an emotional reunion between Lupe Pintor and Owen's dad and family....nearly cried watching it!

CHB.... the story on SBS ..'Rings of Fire'?????? I think??????? Regarding Emille Griffiths/Benny Paret was another to leave a some water in the eyes..
A very moving meeting between Emile and Benny's son years later, had myself reaching for the Kleenex... I must have had hayfever.....

Yep, saw that completely by accident a few months ago. Fate had me flick channels and there it was.

Great doco, and what the f... was the ref thinking in the Paret bout? Griffith had him in the corner, you saw it, and he was gone, gone, gone! And where was the bloody referee??

Exactly, its pretty shocking to see Benny's head over the ropes... Emile still socking him, and the referee out of the pic.

This bout has similar shock value to Mercer KOing Morrison. Tommy was asleep, and recieved a dozen goodnight kisses before the ref took control.

    Speaking of Tommy Morrison...

A basic question... Who is his famed uncle????

Was rumoured to be John Wayne but was since disproven.

A great Old Aussie boxing trainer, now deceased, was credited by Slapsie Maxie Rosenbloom and Todd Morgan, as being the best in the World.

    Whats his name????
