I've just been watching the Reg Gutteridge tribute program and they showed his commentary on the Hagler-Hearns fight with Don Curry doing the "color" along side him. I've seen this fight few quite a few times with Regs commentary but never noticed Curry with him before now. Am I going senile or are there two "versions" of that fight/ commentary in existance?
There are actually 3. There was Al Bernstein and Al Michaels, then HBO with Larry Merchant and Sugar Ray Leonard and Barry Tompkins and then the British version with Donald Curry and Gutteridge.
Me either mate, I've heard the Gutteridge commentary many times but last night on ITV they had Gutteridge and Curry. They were interacting too so it wasn't something they'd patched together later as far as I could tell.
Thats the weird thing, I"ve got versions of the fight with Gutteridge on but not with Gutteridge and Curry...
maybe gutteridge redid the commentry later on his own for a new programme or something because he clearly says above me and curry as they ffight above them
Yep, maybe there was some issue using Curry somewhere along the line. It really threw me though, I thought I knew pretty much every line in that commentary and then Don Curry pops up!!!
when he spoke i was like who the ****s this guy dont remember him incidently first time i saw hagler hearns it was in chinese that was a ****ing laugh
The British coverage of the fight, by ITV, had Reggie Gutteridge with Donald Curry co-commentating with him. Reggie's usual partner was former lightweight champ, Jim Watt, but for the Hearns fight and also the Mugabi fight, Curry was alongside him for those two Hagler fights. I lived in UK at the time and there was no other version. Reggie and Don Curry.
Dave thanks for the insight i just couldnt remember Curry and i have only seen the Yank version of the Mugabi fight so dont knwo about the british version.
