He should take a definite step-up next. Ricardo Torres (massive hitter but vulnerable) Junior Witter (awkward, hard puncher, probably never happen but you see what range I'm in) or Meidana (one dimensional, big puncher, recently fought WBA champ Kotelnik) would get Ortiz right up in the top ten and would be a genuine test for him. If not, battle of the prospects; Ortiz vs. Lamont Peterson. Ndjougo would be a good honest test for him. WOuld be coming off the back of a heavy defeat and would still be highly-ranked by the IBF. He needs these kind of fights before he challenges the winner of Bradley (big at the weight, seems to be a slick boxer, intelligent fighter) and Holt (dodgy chin but can punch when he wants too and is fast, experienced too) or Urango (beast, if Ortiz could use his speed and outbox Urango good for him, but I can see URango being too strong, and although wild, Ortiz isn't exactly hard to hit.) If he beats one of the aforementioned contenders then beats one of those champions, I could see him competing with Hatton. Until then, Hatton's experience would see him through. He's being touted by some (not many, but some) as being able to beat the P4P no.1 who is an aggresive southpaw. How a fringe contender, inexperienced aggresive southpaw in Ortiz is supposed to beat Hatton I don't know.
if amir khan knocked him out in the amateurs I don't think he'll ever beat a fighter like hatton unless he gets old.
David Tua was knocked out by a single (actually, the FIRST) punch in an the amateurs, never saw any danger of that happening in the Pro's. Mind you, Savon is little bit better than Khan
Right now Hatton. In a few years, a combination of Hatton declining and Ortiz rising means Ortiz takes him out. The true fight for the LW division will be the winner of Holt/Bradley vs Ortiz. Hatton won't be around much longer so barring something unforseen, these three guys will be carrying that division.
Ortiz would beat Hatton and ive been saying this for about a year now but I really want to see Ortiz go 12 rounds with a worthy opponent... Most of his fights were short 4,5 round short knockouts so it's kinda hard to gauge him as a whole.. but if he can keep up the pace for 12 rounds then he would beat hatton's easily... He got that southpaw style which is always a plus..
so ortiz beats hatton easily? what top tier fighters has ortiz beaten that gives you that impression?
It's not always about who they beat, but how they dealt with their opponents... NObody destroyed Carlos Maussa and Arnoutis the way Ortiz did... IT took less than 5 rounds in both fights and that's something... Besides all that, I broke down Ortiz' style and based on my observation, he has the power, the tools, and the style to beat hatton...
Ortiz by knockout... if an old faded and out of his best weight class in Juan Lazcano almost knocked his ass out imagine what a younger faster stronger and more skill boxer like Ortiz would do to him. And for those saying that it's to early for Ortiz well news flash he just stopped a top fighter that was NEVER knocked out before not to mention not even two of the top fighters in that division he fought couldn't put him out and one of them is one of the bigger puncher in that weight class in Ricardo Torres so that says something about Ortiz i expect him to clean out that division in a few years.
Yeah i reckon hatton's got too much experience for ortiz right now too, but the kid's tough enough to go the distance. ricky by UD. i'm impressed with this kid tho, he's a terrific prospect with bundles of talent. definately going places if he keeps developing as he is.
Lazcano fight was an off night.. you know boxers have them. Ortiz is a prospect and you think he can beat the best in division. No.
