This is my top ten lightweights, whadya think? http://www.britishboxing.net/news_4388-Britain-s-top-fighters-the-lightweights.html
Alex Arthur is the best lightweight having never fought at lightweight? After getting outboxed by Nicky Cook? I don't really see how that works out. Other than that I would not argue, but I think we'll see Watson replacing Gethin at least.
Arthur is the only fighter operating at the weight with and decent form at or above European level. I know it was a dodgy one with him not having fought at the weight but his comparitive performance against Willie puts him above Khan and Murray and Thaxton have yet to progress beyond domestic level, hence his placement.
Arthur at number 1 is right. Arthur vs Khan will happen this year. Jeff do you see that as a better test than Murray??? Watson will 100% be ahead of Gethin by end of March. Oh an Limmond to beat the french guy that beat Thaxton, NO CHANCE! Limmond couldnt stop a Super Bantam in his last fight that has been taken apart by anyone british level and above. Limmond has done nothing to show he is beyond Commonwealth level. his best fights and TKO losses to Arthur and Khan.
If Khan beats Barrera would you put him top Jeff? Anyway good article, always like to read your top 10's, will be interesting reading the heavyweights!
a top 10 in british heavyweights taht would be a laugh theres only 2 good fighters and ones past it Dany Williams and David Haye
I reckon you just put Arthur in the top spot to make it up to the Scots after you had Appleby so low I would have Murray at number 1 but he needs to keep fighting, he has lots of ability but I think he needs to see his career is going places. Would like to see him take on any of the top 5 after his last win or go after the Euro belt.
Personally I'd put Khan top on pure potential. I mean Arthur's a tidy fighter but I think he's peaked, I don't think he'll fair much better at 135, Murray's a tough honest pressure fighter who might do well at European type leve, but Khan - despite his chin problem and lack of inside game, has much greater potential as a fighter. He's brilliant at some thing like you mentioned, his handspeed and accuracy, doesn't really well he's fantastic offensively, and working with Roach if he can sort his defence and perhaps take some shots he'll go a long way. The point is none of Murray, Arthur, Thaxton, Limond etc wow you, Khan though is a young lad he's superb at a lot of things, whereas none of Arthur et al really are, they are just solid fighters.
i'm not a fan of ranking fighters at a weight they have never fought at, so wouldn't have arthur at number 1. can't argue with the positioning of the rest. if khan beats barrera (shot or not) he becomes the clear number 1.
You'd have to really... In terms of talent as full package I don't put Murray or Arthur too far behind Khan but they have yet to fight anyone anywhere near Barreras class. The thing with Arthur is I really rate him, always have done. He's a class act and I still think he was a better fighter on the way up then Khan. I also think he was suffering hugely at the weight. He looked so gaunt, i think it just became too much for him. I think if he can find his form again he will be too much for Khan. If he's got flat because he doesn't want it anymore Khan will blow him out. Thats why he MUST fight Murray... then there can be no arguments about his opponent been past it.
5 pounds can make a lot of difference. Until Arthur wins at the weight his ability at 135 must be in question for ranking purposes at least.
True Achilles, it was a contoversial pick but he would look out of place behind a guy who has failed to make any real impression at Euro level (1 fight aside), a guy who has never fought a puncher and another fellow who seems to possess a chin that belongs on a six your old.
I am thinking Tyson Fury could be in it, which is just appalling considering he has only had 3 fights (soon to be 4), and Michael Sprott could be the number two heavy if he beats Brewster...
