i have abook by a famous british boxer at the turn of the century A.J Newton

    in the book he mentions

'No exercise is more beneficail to the boxer in training than pedestrianism'

'If you wish to lose flesh you msut reduce your allowance of liquid food. starving is to deprecated, though it is always well to come to a meal hungry.'

'Massage has been introduced by the Americans as a regular part of training. Their sucess is great. It removes superflous fat in the best possible way, and is a fine corrective for stiff muscles.'

'I always begin by saying "Don't smoke." But if the man to be trained is a confirmed smoker i never attempt to deprive him of pipes after meals, which have become so much part of his constituition that any deprevation of them is a real hardship. Training never imposes severe hardships, a rule quite worth remembring.' He goes onto say that non smokers are better at athletic abilities.

'Don't take too much much sleep. The ordinary business man gets to bed about elevan. Do you do the same. You will be able to get about eight hours sleep and you will need no more. The man who spends longer times in bed has a tendancy towards lassitude which is hard to overcome.'

'Abstainers may drink about half a pint of weak tea a week, coffee, or, chocalate.....in place of the moderate drinkers half pint of ale.

'Early morning rising and running is much to be recommended.'

    'hours must be regulasr.'

    thats it all on training

Heard that Sonny Liston ate one meal a day while training. That meal was steak. Raw.

Yeah apparently he was telling him that the blood would be the difference in strength in the champonship rounds and he'd beat his butt because of it.

Interesting that Fitz's roadwork epitomizes the muscle confusion principles that are behind some of today cutting edge fitness programs. Also, he is clearly trying to simaultaneously build power (sprints) anaerobic (intervals) and aerobic (static pace runs/walks) conditioning.

Also interesting that he drinks booze for breakfast. I wonder what he drank for lunch.
