Keep sparring, it's hard to not cover up and back up. He's gotta learn lateral movement.

You could work it on the pads? Have the person holding them rush him and get him to side step and fire off a 1-2.

Straight shots down the pipe work with brawlers, and the uppercut is ALWAYS on when fighting a brawler.

telll your boy not to get disheartened get him sparring people who brawl him then get him to spar brawlers who jump on you from the start taht should help him otu

Might it be his nerves? He has to relax in the ring and over time he'll learn that.

    How experienced is he?

Thats what he needs. If he does have a lot of it...some people just aren't made to be fighters...:boxing2

Not really. If he aint use to big hard hitters he needs to train harder and spar against harder hitters aswell as some good technical advice to build up his confidence. Im sorry but if you aint got any confidence in boxing you aint gonna get very far. im not saying beat the ****er to a pulp, just for him to get used to harder hitters and knowing how to counter.

Confidence needs to be built up slowly, getting hit with hard punches is what destroys confidence not what builds it.

agree.. no point of throwing guys in, to get the crap beat out of them. That would certainly, eventhough im almost 30, not bring any confidence my way.

i recently started a thread about, that i sometimes closed my eyes while sparring. Now here a little week later, its much much better, because ive had the chance, to work on some adjustments.. such as not lunging in, instead of looking at my opponents chin, im now looking at their forehead.

i can easely say, had i been punished with hard shots, which some of the guys could have thrown in my face, i wouldnt have had, the opportunity, to adjust my mistakes. Ok some hard shots have come my way, but what the hell its boxing :thumbsup

thats exactly the same this guy/boy needs.. sparring sparring and then some more sparring.. train the situation, where someone is rushing him, but witout throwing bombs.. give him time and room, to step away or slip the punches, and increase the speed of the exercise, until he gets better.

he has to feel that while training it, he os comfortable and doesnt freeze. if that means you have to start out at a pace for elderly people, then so be it. Before you know, he doesnt give a **** about it:bbb

Have you thought about the fighters that he's fighting are too strong for him? Maybe you're moving him up too fast.

If you have the luxery of doing so, line him up with smaller but aggressive fighters that likes to brawl, that way he may not feel too overwhelmed and fight back.

its what worked with me so dont knock it till you try it. then again im only 5'7 and when i spar against a guy whose 6'4 im loving it and to be honest i had him on the ropes even tho i got a couple of cuts and bruises. just get him comfortable with hard hitters so he wont be **** scared is all im saying.
