Just watching a Bert Sugar interview and I hear Bert and many other say Tysons Knowledge is incredible. Thats interesting of all the people you would think study the history. Would he be a good or very good historian?I like the idea of him commentating.A lot of people disliked Foreman,I actually liked the insight from his stand point.same for Lennox.Why not Tyson?
Tyson has done commentary before. Most memorable being his commentary on the Brown-Pettway fight which was hilarious. Hes knowledgeable. His study of the history of the sport had to be good, remember he was managed by Jacobs and Cayton who had the largest boxing film collection in the world. Hes probably seen more rare fights than just about anyone. They used to send him fights constantly to watch.
He was trained by Cus so his knowledge of the sweet science and the history of it is probably pretty good. As for commentating, the voice and his anger problems. Could you imagine? That boy just look at me? Look at me again, your messin with the man! I'll eff you til you love me ******! all in that squeaky voice. Probably be very entertaining though.
Being knowledgable is different from being a good commentator. Hell, a lot of us are knowledgable, but how many of us would be good commentators? Tyson would need a lot of work, because he was laughably bad during that Hopkins-Mercado 2/Brown-Pettway card. "He's uncoherent"
No. Tyson is not a good historian at all. I view him as more of an informed fan. Tyson had access to Cus Damato's partner, Jimmy Jacobs and Bill Clayton films. Clayton sold Jacob's rare fight collection to ESPN classic, and 99% of the library has not been seen since. Having said that, Tyson can be entertaining behind the microphone.

Mike is a natural on camera and behind the mike. I value his opinions greatly and would have done much better than people like Alex Wallau, Dierdorf. These were the best that was offered in the 80s. Those people have no real passion for the sport the way Mike does and Mike was always very creative the way he expressed himself. With his knowledge and passion, he'd be great with the color commentary

There used to be an HBO program called In this corner that I would regularly catch back in the 80's and 90's. Tyson was often one of the people who would be on there firing off tid bits about various fighters and their history.
