Im pretty sure Hop would love to stand in the middle of the ring and trade with Calzaghe. He would win. And a Calzaghe before 05 would have most likely let him.

If Hop tried that after 05 Calzaghe would react, engage, then **** off. And he would come out on top, because that is his strength, and as it happens, Hop's weakness(Fast hands). Horrible plan for the 07 fight or a fight in future.

Hop had the right plan for Calzaghe, he just couldnt sustain it. People put that down to age, but for that to be true he would have had to have been spent by the 4th.

And he proved 6 months later he can stand someone on their head for 12 rounds, not just 4. And while Pavlik was rubbish that night, he didnt take a backward step and made Hop work for the 12.

If Calzaghe is such a ***** slapper and didnt out punch Hopkins then why didnt Hopkins break through and knock him out, or at least win a decision? Hopkins did land cleaner shots and had good moments, but it simply wasnt enough and you cant bash Calzaghe for Hopkins inability to take the fight.

    Lets see, score tot up.

Jeff M starts a thread whingeing about Joe Calzaghe, then brings up Ricky Hatton despite no-one else having mentioned him.

All we need is for him to bring up and slag off Carl Froch for no reason and then to get offended and deny it when someone calls him a Brit Hater Troll, then the Jeff M step-by-step threadbuilder will have been followed to the letter once more....

It was a close fight no matter which way you look at it, but seeing it live I had Calzaghe winning. I will however watch the fight again and look for who landed the cleaner punches, which I'm guessing is Hopkins, who actually got his oppenent down and doesn't slap with his punches. I used to hate when Chris Bryd would do it, but 9 times out of 10 Bryd would given a break because more times than not his oppenent was much bigger than him and the ref probably figured he needed every break he can get.

I personally dont like Calzaghe, but the man's workrate and hand speed are one of a kind. Someone mentioned earlier hand speed is what kills Hopkins in the ring, which is very true, Taylor, RJJ, and Calzaghe all have tremendous speed with their punches.

wtf why are ppl even bother arguing who won this fight? Even if Calzhaghi KO's Hopkins he wouldn't go down as a ATG.

Let say he knocked out a 40 yr old RJJ and a 43 urold fart Hopkins, what does it mean? **** all.

The fact he didn't manage to knock out either of these old farts speaks volumes. Christ RJJ didn't even have the strength to hold up his own arms after 3 rounds. You would think 12 rounds of a thousand slaps would knock out an old man with his arms below his belt but no no no. it wasnt to be.

calzlaphi your a disgrace, don't even think about coming back cus we don't wanna see your sissy slaps again.

I don’t personally like Calzaghe’s style as it is awkward to watch and since his hand issues became an even bigger problem he has relied on speed and work rate rather then power to win fights. When he showboats he looks daft not cool and without doubt the fight against Hopkins was a very close fight. Hopkins comes across as a bit of a **** to me from what I have seen of him via the TV and internet. But as a boxer he has kept himself in superb shape and even at 44 (ish) he is a genuine P4P top six boxer or higher on anyone’s list. He had a great run of defending the middleweight title and recently took to school the much hyped (and still world class) current middleweight king Pavlik. I also find Hopkins boring to watch (Pavlik fight excluded) and although I think he would edge Chad Dawson if they fought tomorrow I would rather watch Dawson or Pavlik fight any day of the week. But a full year nearly after the Calzaghe vs. Hopkins fight and even after Calzaghe has retired people are still whining about it is pathetic. Hopkins was beaten because he did less then Calzaghe and then started to gas so he feigned an injury to get a much needed breather. To say if he fought Calzaghe the same way he fought Pavlik then he would win is crap. No one is going to do that to Calzaghe for 12 rounds he is too smart and too quick. He can adapt better then even Hopkins can mid fight. Same way as any middle/super middle/light heavyweight saying that they will knock Hopkins out is talking crap. Mind you if Hopkins does step up to cruiserweight as was mentioned then I think even his granite chin will get clocked by the big hitters in the division. Let it go people and look forward to the great fights we all got coming this year.

Hopkins fought Calzaghe like a tired, bitter old man. That was the only chance he had. If he fought like he did Pavlik, he would landed a handful more shots, taken twice as many in return, and gassed even earlier and possibly suffered a Manfredoesque ending. I don't need to see that crap again.
