You're probably correct. My recall of Damiani-Stevenson is not at all vivid. I watched Mercer-Damiani with far more interest.
I was thinking the same thing. He may not have been an all-time great, but he could make almost anybody look bad.
Yea, Toney too. But I think that Russian Sultan could be considered a cutie too. Very slick from what little I've seen of him.
Hmm, would Jimmy Ellis count? Can't fault a 155 middleweight who fought Ruben Carter who moved up to HW. Corbett, though that's hard to discern without footage of him. Tony Tubbs, of course.
so we got 1)Jersey Joe Walcott 2)Jimmy Young 3)Chris Byrd 4)James Toney 5) Jimmy Ellis Thats all we got for cuties...
On film, there has not been better heavyweight cuties than Jersey Joe Walcott, Archie Moore, and James Toney.... Let me know if you've seen better. I havnt!!!
I could only think of Walcott, (I forgot to add Moore) Jimmy Young, James Toney...Sometimes Byrd ( when he did not try prove he could punch) Chambers may be a cutie in the making but his training looks a bit compromised....Mike Hunter had a lil cute style but he diod not excell in the upper bracket Ezzard Charles had some cute moves but was really a master counter puncher so this is the list for ATG CUTIES 1) Jersey Joe Walcott 2) Archie Moore 3) Jimmy Young 4) James Toney 5) Chris Byrd
My Mrs looks a little like John 'BuckHorse' Smith, from the Prize Ring Era..... She's a cutie!! Just not sure where she rates??
Mildenberger was a stolid Southpaw, nothing unpredictable or clever about him Cooper made him look **** before the German fouled out. A better choice from that era would be Joe Erskine. But the undisputed Champ for Heavyweight Cutie is Jersey Joe!
I must say a word for the unimpressive looking, but surprisingly effective Sultan Ibragimov. I gained alot of respect from him from his fights against Briggs as well as the over the hill Holyfield. He utilizes that awkward style of his and knows well his limitations, and I would definitely consider him to be an underrated "cutie".
Of that list, Walcott is unique in the sense that he also packed one hell of a punch, in both hands. Put the great Joe Louis three times on the seat of his pants and of course who could forget that great uppercut on Charles, or the hook that put Marciano down. Pinpoint accuracy and timing. If you look at those others, Byrd, Young and Toney are pretty much featherfisted. Moore had good power though, and Ibragimov has decent power. He also had the ability to change styles. For instance, if all you'd ever seen of him was the first round of Walcott-Marciano I, then you'd think he was an aggressive power puncher. Interesting change of strategy, and certainly a smart one considering Rocky could start a bit slow, but he couldn't know that the man is almost impossible to hurt..
