just dont be nervous youll be more tired after one round cause youll be usure what happens etc.

also if it goes bad dont worry about it, its a learning curve.

and at first throw as hard as the other guy does if you start throwing bombs straight away your going to get beaten badly.

K cheers man, just saying cos I could be going in against this 25 year old spanish bloke. I know for a fact i can take a hard punch and give one back aswell but heres my game plan :

Jab and guard constantly til backed up into a corner, then side step leading out with a body shot to turn him then land 2 jabs, 4 big shots then flurry and see where it goes

will you be sparring just him or swapping about?

whats his style and height compared to yours and weight?

make sure if your throwing jabs that once you get onto the ropes throw your right hand after the jab and will give you a few extra seconds to move out the way and get off them

Dont sweat it, your supposed to spar somebody better than you so you can learn from them.

The thing that most first timers find difficulty in is staying calm. It's not easy remaining composed when someone is unloading on you. With my students I try to get them to buy time by closing down the distance and clinching a lot. Get your shots off and tie up your opponent. After a couple of rounds of this you should feel more comfortable, then you can start to work to a proper gameplan.

That's never going to work. Don't worry about any sort of tactical thinking. Just go out there and keep your hands up and try to land your jab, its just a sparring match. Stay calm too, 16 oz. gloves with headgear and the guy is more than likely going to take it easy on you. There's nothing else that needs to be said about this.

at the risk of sounding completely stupid - during sparring are guys hitting each other with full force? are there rules(unwritten or otherwise) regarding sparring?

This seems to depend on the person and where he/she first started sparring. I personally always do 100% speed 50% power. Most people seem to do about the same thing, but it varies. Newer guys seem to get jumpy and cant control their power or anything yet so they will swing for the moon. One of my coaches though has broken three different guys ribs while sparring in the last year. (He's a professional sparring other professionals)

Otherwise I personally think power shots should be saved for the bag and competition.

like said before it depends who your going against.

some people are liberty takers and will just try and beat you up but most people will be fine and let you just learn.

usually the liberty takers arent as good so beat people up to make them feel a world beater.

when i spar i try and tell people how to do things better, my coach tells me not to do it anymore though, but i think if they are better then ill only improve so why not give them keys to beat me so i can learn new things

i can't remember ever going training and having a set plan for sparring.
yes ,you are in there to learn but its inevitable that some lads will turn it into a war.
personally ,i took my hardest punches in sparring, usually to the body(*******s)

i agree with you on this .we used to tell one another were we were going wrong and acknowledge when a good punch had been landed on you !!
