2 fighters that are basically slick, fast, counter punchers. With Whitaker continually backing up and Camacho moving from side to side and pursuing each trying to draw the others lead. Whitaker, who was a multi division champ should win this in what is basically is a sleeper, but Camacho has his moments.
Whitaker, as he was far better in a mulit-dimensional sense in terms of offense and defense. Better jab and smarter as well.
The Pre-Rosario Camacho was a very fast aggressive come foreward fighter, Who threw alot of punches. This is the Camacho, who would make this an interesting match up. The post-Rosario , cautious, safety first Camacho would be easy pickings for Whitaker.
This is basically a contest between two slick, defensive southpaws. Hector is out to prove his mastery in this fight as he did in the fight with Leonard. Pernell is simply to slick and clever for anyone but Camacho. Whitaker cant hurt him and Hector excels against all boxers. His speed will enable him to beat Pernell to the punch because when it came to handspeed, it was no contest. After a few rounds, Pernell will know he's behind and become frusrated, forcing him to take more chances. Hector will capatalize on those mistakes, and send him to the canvas with a precision counterpunching left. After ten rounds, hector is comfortably ahead. Pernell attempts to take it to the inside but Hector smartly holds on for a comfortable unanimous decision and proves himself as one of history's greatest lightweights along with Roberto Duran.
Imo some in and out movement is what you will need against Whittaker before people can even anywhere can even consider you beating him, Camacho was decent at this facet of the game, with his main asset that slickness and the speed doesnt hurt here either. I just think though that he jabs a lot and while that is a good thing generally i think he has a battle of jabs here with Pernell and i rate his jab highly for many reasons. Pernell imo in the chess match.
Pea would be right there countering. His reflexes were every bit as good as Hector's, plus Whitaker is simply the better technician. I like Pea by decision.
how do you counter the faster man and come out on top? I have not seen this happen. Did Benitez outbox Leonard? or Hearns? Did Leonard outbox Norris? Did Jimmy ellis outbox Ali? Did Reggie Johnson out box Roy Jones? See what I'm getting at?
You can negate speed with top shelf technical ability..which Pea had..You can also negate speed with your own very impressive speed which Pea had, This would be a closely fought chess match but overall I think Whitaker is the better fighter, more versatile and better schooled. If he had trouble with Camacho on the outside, which could well happen, he could slip inside and do great work there aswell. But he could also edge Hector on the outside by picking his spots wisely I reckon and using his superior jab. Id imagine Pea would just find the best way to win like he always does..outlanding his opponant and jabbing the **** out of them. Stylistically an interesting fight I do agree...But Pea wins it.
Did Vernon Forrest outbox Shane Mosley? Did Antonio Tarver outbox Roy Jones? Did Winky Wright outbox Shane Mosley? Camacho was faster than Whitaker, but not by miles. Whitaker is closer in speed to Camacho than any of the winning examples I mentioned earlier were to their defeated opponents. This fight is a tough call. I've always believed that the way to defeat Whitaker is to turn him into the aggressor. This is not a sure fire formula, but it is the worst part of his game. It would be interesting to see him against a faster fighter in retreat. Camacho may have come out macho for this fight, but Whitaker's jab and physical strength would have Camacho on his toes in no time. I'm not saying Whitaker is a lot stronger than Camacho, Camacho is somewhat stocky and wide in the shoulders; but Whitaker was too strong to be bullied by him. Whitaker was always strong in the clinch. De la Hoya didn't appear to be stronger than Whitaker in their fight at 147. I really believe the difference in this fight will be Pernell Whitaker's jab. When you and your opponent face off with the same hand leading, the jab is much more of a consideration. Pea by decision
