Poll: Is Roy Jones a top 10 all time great lighheavyweight?

In another thread I mentioned that Jones could or would be a top 10 LHW. Upon reflection and several posts on this thread, I've changed my mind. The LHW are too deep for Jones to be included.

I can't place him over Moore, Charles, Loughren, Tunney, Foster, Spinks, John Henry Lewis, Billy Conn, or Jack Delaney, and am not so sure about Maxie Rosenbloom, Harold Johnson, Saad Muhammad, or Battling Levinsky. Jones and Victor Galindez, another fighter who never unified the title seem neck and neck. Virgill Hill also stacks up well against him at LHW.

You don't fancy Roy h2h against them? His resume may not be as deep as some but for the comp that he faced and the manner he beat them as well as his h2h capability warrants a top 10 in my book.



Admittingly, I don't have nearly the knowledge as the regulars in the classic forum.

 

You're no dummy, that's clear already. H2H is a different question for me. I don't factor it in when comparing legacies. It's too inexact; comparing quality of opponents and longevity and such is more feasible. Jones loses points for his reluctance to face certain fighters, his unavenged KO losses in this division, and the comparative mediocrity of his opposition. Magoo and others highlight the length of his reign and the number of his defenses. The first thing I look for is serious names.

Many fans can't get bring themselves past the cosmetics of his dominant wins throughout his career. You know, how devestating he looked in taking out ..............Vinnie Paz.............When you start talking about elite guys -it takes more than that.

--just saw McGrain's post. And right, Jones would score quite high on "formidability of style" so that is kind of a proxy head-to-head if you will.

Now, if you would have put Jones KO 1 Moore, I would be inclined to agree:smoke

If only to provide proper motivation for McGrain to elbow and chew his way to the top of pugilistic immortality.

Bull****, Ruiz has been a top ranked contender for a longer period (8 years) than Barkley (5 years). Not bad for a human punching bag with arms huh? That same human punching bag was at even odds with THE top fighter of the 90's.
