Tyson hits very hard. However his power was always overrated. Tysons' best asset has always been his speed and explosiveness. Punching in combination used to be his ticket to success. His opponents would be blinded by his set ups and never see the big one coming. As soon as he fell in love with his power and looked for the big one punch knockout he became 10 x less of a fighter.

I find it funny that anyone would say Tysons Power was over rated. His KO of Berbik was an amazing ****. I very very short left hook that traveled 9-12 inches, landed on the forehead not the jaw, and sent him down like shot... not once, but 4 times. How about the super short right hand he KO'd Botha with. Tyson KO'd guys with left hooks, right hands, uppercuts, and bodyshots. Tyson attributes were all exceptional. Hand speed, foot speed, power, dexterity, agility, punch variety, defense, and of course chin. At his peak he was truely something secial

    Tyson's punches were CREAMPUFF.

    All Tyson's KOs were photoshopped...

Nice insight. Sonny Liston and Jack Dempsey were also knocking teeth out of their sparring partners with like 20 oz gloves..

Yes they were. The difference being that Teddy Reid was dropping Heavyweights while himself weighing 158 lbs.

I have not read all thread but i want to comment the title. Tyson was NEVER A HUGE PUNCHER. But combination speed the way he throw them and the MAIN THING his accurate makes him one of the sharpest punchers AT. Just like Holmes sad after the fight "Shavers is much more powerful than tyson but tyson has an incredible sharp punch which he landed on my temple and that was it, I was unable to recover."

Hello everybody! This is my very first post here on the forums. Great pleasure being here, thanks for having me.

    My opinion:

First, it needs to be differentiated between physical strength and physical power. Strength alone does not equal a hard punch, awesome physical power equals a hard punch as it is the combination of strength and speed or explosiveness. Another factor that comes into play is leverage and accuracy.

Mike Tyson is a natural born wrecking machine. You just need to look at him to understand this concept: everything looks so strong, especially his back - including his massive neck - legs, shoulders and arms. Wladimir Klitschko is not a born fighter, he is more of a trained athlete: he has skinny legs and a rather small neck.

Klitschko is extremely tall. That many of his opponents for most of the fights stand in front of him trying to out-box him adds to the fact that he has good leverage: he often just punches down on almost stationary targets. Then he is capable of landing severe power punches. When under attack, though, his punches appear less powerfull. Even when going forward, like against Ibragimov (the "knockdown" or "pushdown"), his power is less extreme. Klitschko is powerfull when he has his balance, when he stands tall and punches down on smaller opponents.

Tyson, on the other hand is a short heavyweight whose power comes from extreme explosiveness, natural power and fighting style. He always has balance, therefore can generate power with either hand from every angle and situation imaginable.

Has Wladimir Klitschko ever landed a shot on an opponent as hard or harder than the one Tyson knocked out Botha with?

And that was in 1997 with Tyson coming off a long lay-off.

I think Wlad hits harder than Tyson too.

Tyson is way faster though in terms of handspeed and combination.

But IMO in a punch for punch, guys like Lewis and Wlad hit have heavier punches than Tyson.

Vitlai has better punch anticaption, better defense, and moves his head more and his feet more. In addition, Vitlai is the better counter puncher and in-fighter.

Wlad has better speed, fludidty and power.

I'd skip what Atlas says. He talks with his heart, which is full of hate, and doesn't use his brain.

BAD EXAMPLE!! The Botha punch was not his best. One of the best I belive(not by power but for outcome) was shot on a Holmes which cracked Holmes. Botha is more responsible for that Ko than Tyson.
BUT if you look at wlad it would be Tompson, Brock(which was devastating but not his hardest), Austin(wlad has a great left hook too), or look at the shot's that he lended on byrd in 2 fight one to combinations was flying so fast that sometimes you bearly can see them, or tripple lefthook\upercut wat hi lended on Mercer form LONG distance. This is pretty tough too.
