Opinions of old-timers back in 1980 on Duran as a lightweight. Interesting indeed.

Those are probably his only his fights of note...Two title shots and several fights against guys who had already done something noteworthy or would go on to.

Costa Rica does not have a boxrec editor that I know of...so we may well have to just use logic for this one. He had one fight in 72, one in 73, one in 74, 4 in 75 (one of which was a title shot), then his "last" fight in 76 against Duran.
It just is very unlikely that is his career in full.

Bloody oath it is...as is the only recently dethroned Kobayashi. All before he was champ, which is pretty decent already.

Take them out ,does that make Duran's wins at lightweight comparable? I say no.
Duran is p4p one of the greatest fighters ever ,,no question. But he beat only two really top Lightweights, and one of them was somewhat questionable.I know Buchanan ,I saw him fight and agree with you he is very underated ,except by Duran ,who would never get in a ring with him again.

"Somewhat questionable". I think there's been too much made of it myself. Duran was winning easily. It was a great performance.

I agree he was winning , but I think the circumstances warrant that title and they also warranted a rematch imo.

Was it Eleta who didnt want it or Duran himself?

I have never seen a definitive answer on that.

True. He deserved another go, not doubt.

Well, it's always going to be the management not the fighter. They reneged on their Madison Square Garden contract but Ken was actually offered a rematch- but for buttons and in Panama...and a signed promise he had to go out on a drugs and ale binge with Mando Ramos as part of his training.

More likely they didn't fight him

There was talk of Arguello challenging him but the window didn't quite open.

Thanks Robbi, good reading. I must say that we all know Duran's competition level at 135 nowhere near lives up to the level of the other great lightweights who dominated their respective eras. But just some food for though, for me Ken Buchannan seems more and more underrated as the hours pass. Great, great lightweight in terms of ability, and Roberto put in a special performance there. I dont mind if people want to knock him down their lists based on resume. But when people are saying so and so would have beaten him it somewhat annoys me. Maybe they would have, but the way its so easy a decision for some of the old timers to make surely annoys others aswell?

Any one who states confidently that other great Lightweights ,be it Leonard,Gans,Williams,Ortiz or whoever ,would definitely beat Duran ,is a fool ,or has access to a crystal ball, imo.
