I feel picking Louis over Ali is one of the most outrageous picks that could ever be called. How does flat footed Louis outbox Muhammad Ali, and as hard hitting as Joe was, how does he knockout Ali when Foreman, Frazier, Shavers, Lyle, and Liston couldn't? I just don't see any way.

If Norton could time and counter Ali's jab then Louis would have no problems plus his jab is as good if not better and a far better in fighter. Plus he is a far better finisher then the likes of Foreman, Lyle and Shavers. See its not as easy as you made it sound.

Not to say that anyone of them is a clear favourite but to claim it is outrageous to pick Louis over Ali shows a lack of knowledge.

Selfkill, i dont think the topic is too much about a h2h confrontation, though by the way you are likely right about what you said.

Minotauro, Louis was immense, immense, but the comparison with Norton is off for me. Norton was an awkward customer for Ali, the way he came forward would be more Marciano than Louis in my opinion (just to express how different they are there).

I was just using Norton because he was talking about Shavers, Foreman etc who are nothing like Louis to show the logic of his arguemnt.

The fact you have to bring up a fight that didn't happen at Ali's peak is a testament to how good prime Ali was.

Not a lack of knowledge, I just don't feel any obligation to back the old timer. He was a great fighter in his day, when he was fighting smaller Heavyweights, but he didn't have the power or boxing ability to outbox Ali or knock him out. I think Louis either gets decisioned in a lopsided fight, or gets stopped late.

And Teeto, I realize that, I just wanted to add that in because someone earlier picked Louis to stop Ali. Peak Ali, not the one who fought Norton. I just don't see any way of justifying that.

The logic of my arguement was, if Ali can takes Shavers, Lyle, Foremans, and Fraziers best shots, then he can take Louis' shots also. There is no indication, whatsoever, to suggest that Joe Louis would be favored to stop Ali. Likewise, as good as Joe's jab was, there is no indication to suggest he could beat Ali on the outside, something he would have to be capable of doing against PEAK Ali (I say again, NOT the Ali of Norton).

Does anyone have enough confidence in Louis to dominate the 60's and 70's in a similar manner that he did the 30's and 40's?

    Just my honest opinion.

When I see people picking Louis to stop Ali, my immediate thought is "That's silly". I can't comprehend Ali getting ********* by any version of Louis, who needed to get set to throw his combination's, and for his power to come into play. I don't see him getting set against Ali, and even in the event he catches Ali, Muhammad would have taken it as we have seen him do, time and time again. I'm sorry if i seemed dismissive, people seem quite sensitive with that on here, but I don't envision a victory for Louis in this fight.

Not to mention Ali has the greater resume of the two. Possibly top 5 all-time.

I do. Like I said in my orangial post in this threed Ali was born at the right Time. First of all as good as Ali's era was I think there has been heavyweights both before and after who would have beaten them had they been from that era including Louis.
