Calzaghe Vs ???????

    Big Criticism of Calzaghe I keep reading is he never fought enough elite fighters during his reign at SMW.

    Who could he fought in your opinion that could have changed this between 98-05?.

    ottke but that was an impossible match to be made.
    RJJ was at light heavyweight an not really interested in calzaghe.
    missed benn, eubank and collins primes

    most probably, but to say he avoided him. never in the same weight classin their primes.

    Jones, Hopkins, Toney, Michaelskwi.... they each went out of their way to avoid him. And sure enough, each of these fantastic boxers in their own time has admitted Calzaghe is their superior (or their "daddy" as Jones jr recently called him lol)

    Prime RJJ- 95-03(Agree?. if not say).

    So, even tho I asked for SMW, it's a a common criticism so deserves debate. Start by asking how long do you think Balzsay would take to get at Hop?.

    I personally think Calzaghe could have got RJJ at LH before 03, but it would involve immediatelty vacating his WBO title after October 97, leaving his natural weight class that the 25 yr old 3 and and a half year pro was begining in and moving north, fighting I'd best guess DM's scraps that were willing to fight a nobody, then fight DM, win, then go to America and Fight Roy.

    Nice plan. But what, even if he had done that is so assured that Roy would take the fight. He couldt make fights with fighters of a then higher caliber and more exposure stateside like Jackson,McClellan,Eubank,Benn,Collins and DM himself. Why jump at Calzaghe.?

    What about Warren bringing in Maloney(who had Lewis) for some stateside muscle, inviting Roy to the Woodhall fight in 2000, after Roy said he was intrested in Calzaghe, to try and make the deal. Roy declined the invitiation.


    Prime Bhop (99-05, Agree?, if not say)- Aside from the 02 discussion that Hop pulled out of, why mention a MW?.

    Should Pavlik fight a 154lber before you accept him?. WTF. Who moves down a division? Keep it within Calzaghe's doing, or accuse him of ducking/not fighting Morales.

    Toney was never anywhere near Calzaghe in 98, he was a cruiserweight by then.

    DM could have been made but it would have involved giving up his natural weight class and ****ing off north(Imagine Bute,Kessler,Dawson or any ****er with a belt that cant get an Elite fight) soon after winning it. Doesnt happen in the higher weights.

    Any Calzaghe thread usually gets at least 9 pages of experts with opinions, why is this one different?

    It's a common criticisim of him so surely there are lots of opinions.

    Bottom line is Calzaghe challenged them all - and they all found their excuses.

    It's hilarious that Hopkins and Jones both found their balls when they thought Calzaghe was too old to maintain his relentless style, but how wrong they were!

    Hopkins was made to look no better than a pathetic bar brawler-come-italian footballer. Jones tried to knock Joe out with a disgusting cheap forearm - a shot which would have ended many boxers careers. But not Joe Calzaghe's.

    Calzaghe went on to completely HUMILIATE the ridiculously over rated Jones jnr. Apparently as they embraced after their fight, Roy was overheard thanking Joe for not pushing the fight years ago.

    From '98-'05 he faced several good opponents, Reid, Woodhall, Mitchell, Brewer, but the criticism comes against his overall run in that time span.

    Instead of fighting Veit twice, Mkrtchyan, Pudwill, Jimenez, Salem, Ashira, Sobot, Starie, Thornbery, etc he could have defended against opponents who were seen as top 10 at the weight at some point, unlike any of those guys. That's just way too many defenses against unranked (at least by the RING) opponents. It also would have helped if he had fought the winner of Echols-Brewer instead of the loser, Echols was rated near the top of the 168lbs divsion for a couple years. And of course unifying with Ottke would have been very important, although he can't be blamed much for that.

    Overall, everything has come together nicely and ended well for Calzaghe, he's a great fighter imo, but his claim to having a good, dominant reign is marked badly by that time span where had made a lot of defenses against guys who were never top 10 at the weight.

    Couldnt agree more when it comes to Echols, id also add in Johnson or even Lucas or Beyer would be better than what was served.

    Like you say with the Ottke fight, cant blame him for that.


    No Elite fighters kicking about his weight class but he certainley could have faced tougher foes during that time.

    I agree, doesn't make sense to say Jones or Hopkins. They weren't in the same division and by the early 2000's they both had huge profiles, it would have been very difficult for Calzaghe to get a fight with either of them at the time.


    Definitely. a poor standard of opposition overall, probably more Warren's fault than Calzaghe's, that could have been improved upon with little difficulty, not that he had many options for 'elite' challengers in the division anyway. Everything's worked out well though, he had a pretty nice string of wins from '06 to his retirement.
