Opinions of old-timers back in 1980 on Duran as a lightweight. Interesting indeed.

Jim's the Man, so therefore he lives on. In the article he goes on about an old time fight fan rewatching a fighter, say Lou Jenkins, and not remembering it quite how it was. I tuned in to ESPN classic the other week and saw an Everton game I was at from 20 years ago, and thought "****, I didn't realise we played so badly that day". It was the occasion that was so good then, and this particular result, as opposed to the performance. It's not the film that lies, just our memory of it.

And this is exactly the case. Fellow poster Old Fogey a while ago had a story on how Cus D'Amato somewhere during the 70's was shown film of a fighter he'd seen live in the 20's or 30's whom he spoke very highly of. But when he saw the film back (for the first time and in correct speed, etc), he noticed how weak the guy was technically and how he apparantly mixed up heart and guts with actual boxing ability.

The phrase "i was there live" sounds cool, but usually it's a negative rather than a positive, if you don't re-watch it every 5 or so years.

i agree that he never fought in the strongest era but it was far from weak

on his way to the lightweight title he beat some very good fighters.

Very true...a lot of fights I saw and fixed in my memory, when I watched them again certain things I was off on or exagerated...sometimes the excitement of a live battle plays tricks on the eyes and instant replay and rewind does wonders ....

Haven't read the whole thread but this strikes me as a very intelligent post. I've seen a lot of Duran's fights and it's hard for me to imagine that if you look at him objectively you don't rate him quite high.

Also of curiosity is that I wonder how these old times how rate Duran so low can reconcile their ratings with the IBRO who apparently rate Duran at number 7 all time.

Definately not. A bunch of vhs video tapes have no significant value.

His last fight with Dejesus ,saw him patiently and methodically breaking his man down, compare this with the manic assault of Buchanan ,where he came out like Charles Manson on speed.

I like the Charles Manson version. It was almost like "I want this title so much, **** any game plan we may have worked on".
