I am not saying that he will, I am not saying that he should even be the favorite, but Maskaev had a very good shot at winning if he gets this fight. As impressive as Vitali was in dispatching JC Gomez, he was breathing very heavy after the first two or three rounds. And Gomez was able to land some clean punches to his chin. Maskaev throws a vicious right hand that only needs about one foot to land and do real damage. If Maskaev can get inside and land it flush one time, he has a good shot at winning. I can see how he may have koed Klitschko in the amateurs. Still with all that being said, Vitali has the better chin, is bigger, and hits just as hard. He should be at least a 3 to one favorite.
Vitali has always fought with his mouth wide open, it has nothing to do with being tired. It's very salient not only in the Sanders fight but his fight with Lewis as well as Williams and other past fights. That being said Maskeav has about the same chance as I do sleeping with Jenna Jameson. It's not impossible but highly unlikely. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pffSDq0xjAI&feature=related
maskaev has a puncher's chance...but from that puncher's chance subtract for his concrete feet, difficulty landing from long range, lack of a convincing jab to set up other punches and lack of willingness or ability (hard to say which it is) to throw the uppercut inside. throwing the uppercut off of a short left hand to the chest or shoulders would basically be maskaev's only shot at setting up and following up on short, straight right hands inside. vitali is great at smothering smaller, more compact fighters on the inside with his giant body. i would call maskaev a 5-1 underdog, at least, if this fight happened sometime in 2009.
considering the size disadvantage chagaev--who is, you're right, better than maskaev, but not by enough to make a difference--would have to have more power or more speed (probably both) to be competitive against vitali. the only thing chagaev really has is his tricky, crafty, hunt and peck style. vitali is too patient when he needs to be, too much of a bull when he needs to be derailed by any such tactics as chagaev used to get over on valuev.
Actually if I may, one thing Ruslan has that could bother Vitali is his ability to fight n the inside. I could see getting inside Vitali (like he did Stonehenge) and scoring effeciently on the inside. Problem is Ruslan doesn't have a)the pop to hurt Vitali or b) a good enough uppercut to score enough points to win the round. He has the best shot of anyone in the top 10 to beat Vitali...but it's still a 70/30-ish chance at best.
Vitali thrashes Oleg, ten times out of ten. Waste of time and effort. Especially since Vitali only has a few fights left.
