In the leadup to Pacquiao’s May 2 fight with England's Ricky Hatton his trainer has revealed the event that led the Filipino fighter to run away from home at the age of 14. Says trainer Freddie Roach: "Manny saw his dad eat his dog and that is why he ran away from home and became a boxer." Roach told British sports media that Rosalio Pacquiao took his son's dog, fried it and ate it in front of the child. Roach said that pushed Pacquiao toward stowing away on a ship bound for Manila, where he lived in a slum and sold doughnuts to survive. "The Philippines is a poor place, there’s no welfare, no health system and if you don’t have a job or money then you do anything to survive," Roach said. "Manny arrived in Manila and ended up in a boxing gym."
