I think Hagler would find a way under Monzon's jab and chip away at the ribs, and TKO Carlos somewhere in rounds 13-14-15. Or wins by decision.
I think you have to keep in mind, though, that Hagler, being a southpaw and pretty defensively talented, didn't actually get hit with jabs that much. I can't think of a fight where Hagler got pinned on the end of a jab. It just didn't happen with this guy. Hagler's jab is way underrated and that punch could conceivably control the action, rather than the other way round. Nevertheless, I rate Monzon highly and wouldn't argue too vehemently with a picker of him over Hagler. I just don't think Monzon's jab would be the key thing here.
How do you see a fight between Monzon and Hopkins going, or Monzon and Roy Jones? Hopkins proved against the skilled Wright and the formidable Pavlik that he is very adept at negating an effective jab. Jones's speed made it very very difficult for a jab to catch him. Thoughts?
Monzon by clear unanimous decision. Monzon's jab, height, and reach would control the activity. I realize Hagler had a long reach but Monzon was taller and would be punching "downhill". Hagler became tentative in certain fights: Antuefermo I (although he clearly was robbed), Duran, Geraldo, Leonard. I just think Monzon's business, accuracy, and coolness under fire would carry too many rounds for Hagler to overcome and I don't see Hagler stopping him.
I think Monzon's size helps out a lot, even though I think he loses. He could be slow early on, though. He needed to establish a rhythm. He's not knocking out Hagler for sure. Hagler was hit flush by Hearns and Mugabi, both at the peaks of their powers, and Marvin didn't go anywhere. If Hagler jumps all over him, Monzon could be in some trouble, but because of Monzon's style and Hagler's tendency to start slowly and adapt to his opponent I think it's a distance fight. Hagler has too many tools for Monzon. Marvin had the better opposition and generally performed much more impressively than Monzon, especially before he won the title.
To keep things succinct, at long range Monzon has the edge, definitely. At mid and close range I give the edge to Hagler. Could Monzon keep this long range advantage going for 12 rounds? Probably. I think Hagler would have to get in closer from early rounds. Whether he would choose to do this, is an intangible.
Great post, and although I'm torn on what would happen with these two, I cannot disagree with your view on the outcome with any great confidence. :thumbsup
i think Hgaler was good at not taking jabs. So i think he can work his way forward negating Monzons jab with head movement and defence to land his own powerful jab and get into mid range and land some meaty stuff. The fight would be razor close but i do think Hagler wins a UD. I also think hagler has pretty good footwork and once he can get into range he can manuever round Monzon to stop getting tyed up. But Monzons a ******* to outpoint so it could go anyway.
