Some people think Moorer's LHW resume is overrated, but how would he fare against all-action Matthew Saad Muhammad???
Not well....Far more impressed by Mr Franklin at the weight. I say its a good tussle for the first 2/3...but Moorer weakened by making the weight gets stopped at some point in the last 1/3...maybe even earlier. Cant really picture Michael taking this one.
I actually think Moorer would do well....it'd be an all-action fight where both guys get hurt badly, but I think Muhammad....who was more adept at taking beatings....would take it via PTS.
Moorer's abilty to take a punch at LH was actually pretty good, and Saad's proclivity to go to war doesn't serve him that well against a guy to was a murderous puncher at that weight. Tough call, imo...but I think this plays out like Jackson/McClellan 1, with Saad playing the Jackson role. Moorer KO 6.
I'd pick moore. Moore is one of the top punchers in light heavyweight history and I couldn't see matthew taking barrages of punishment without going down. Furthermore, with the way that he fought after abandoning defense to please crowds I think that there's an excellent chance of him being seriously injured in this fight.
The problem with sizing Moorer up to any all time great light heavyweight, is that he had too few fights against credible opposition at this weight to make any sort of a reasonable assesment. Leslie Stewart may very well be the best man he ever beat at 175 lbs and from what I recall Moorer was actually behind before stopping Stewart later. Although Moorer was a dangerous southpaw with enough power to stop any light heavyweight, I can't give him the nod against a man who was far more proven at these weight perameters. I'm going with Saad by a decision.
Moorer fought at a slow methodical pace, unlike the high output dynamic approach fighters like Johnson and Lopez in their rematch used to turn the fight into wars. I think he gets picked off to an extent early in a competitive fight and laid clean out before he gets the chance to really get to Saad. It's possible he could really hurt him he lands right, but i have vastly more faith in Saad's ability to recover and suck up punishment than i do moorer.
Once again, I agree with Mantequilla. Moorer was a puncher with a decent jab at LHW, that's pretty much it. He lacked physical strength and any kind of defensive skills, and against a puncher like Muhammad, that spells doom. I'm shocked that so many would favor him, I consider Saad at least a full level above.
I don't know about that, I remember seeing a couple of fights where it looked like his chin might at least have cause to question it. As has been pointed out, Moorer liked to fight at a slow methodical pace against fighters who offered any resistance, and it's hard to fully assess him given the fairly low quality of his opposition. I would have to give Saad the edge for his strength and power here.
I hate to agree with this! I'm a big franklin/saad phan, but this is what I see happening as well, although I would go around 11-12th rds. But I would be cheering for another Miricle from matt!
I am perplexed right now. It's now official, Moorer at LHW is one of the most overrated fighters ever. I knew this **** went on in the General Forum, but I really didn't figure the Classic Forum would be on his one-dimensional nuts like this.
I'm a homophobe, so I ain't hangin' on any nuts!!!! Personally I would bve cheering my heart out for Matt who I think is a great LHW as well. I know moorer didn't fight world shattering comp during his title years at LH, but I am not sure I remember any of them going the distance. I personally am not even a small time fan of Moorer, I just see it going down. peace
If Moorer wanted to go to war, then Saad would match him punch for punch. Then drag him in to the deep waters of the late rounds & drown Moorer. Saad TKO 11.
I have to disagree. Moorer had a great jab at LHW. Defensively he was very sound. Took lots of punches on the gloves and forearms, was very adept at slipping jabs and right leads with a tilt of his head to his left and his foot positioning was always good against both righties and other southpaws. He was very efficient and accurate due to his fundamentals. Moorer counterpunched superbly and carried thunderous power in both hands. Rather than over rated i feel he is dismissed at light heavy, at 6' 2" with a 78" reach he was a big LHW, southpaw to boot, who H2H is trouble for most at this weight
