Numbers again. I am not going into detailed discussion about becoming 0.5 fighter nowadays and 80 years ago as I do not have enough data. Simply, if you look at the record of most champions, just notice how long did it takes before he fights recognizable opponents, before he takes a titlefight, etc. I think only Foreman is somewhat comparable. Tyson, Holy, ...

I agree lenghtening the fight increase the chance of KO, I just doubt if in the case of Vitali (who looks gassed after 6 rounds) it would go in his favour

You convinced me Vitali achieved something extraordinary. To have the highest KO% in history of champions, despite being technically only a titleholder, have to be really special .

I think Vitali KO ratio is connected also with his style - he is too big, and he can land constantly at his opponent while being out of reach himself. Most of his KO's are from the accumulation, and it is not that often he KO's someone with single shot (apart from Kirk, I would have to think hard).

 

This is mainly because he was a regional fighter for the majority of his career, fighting regional fighters with padded records. This is how the likes of Michael Jennings can get a record of 34-1. We saw when he stepped up to world class against Cotto that he was woefully outclassed.

The gloves these days aren't necessarily safer for the fighters on the receiving end of punches in terms of concussive KO's. They are better for the hands of the ones throwing the punches, and "safer" in terms being it less likely for punches to cause cuts or bone fractures. They are actually worse for causing concusive brain injuries and KO's, which are mostly caused by repeated blows (especially in the case of Vitali who does NOT have one-punch KO power).

You can actually throw harder punches with modern gloves because of the lower chance of hand injury. The gloves do not stop the concussive effect (this is caused by the brain hitting the inside of the skull where there is no extra padding) they lessen the effect on the external impact area (ie skin & hands).


The 12/15 Round argument also doesn't hold much water. Statistics show that KO's are less likely to happen in the later rounds.

Also, we see in 4 / 6 / 8 round fights that the fighters fight harder for the KO, knowing they don't have to conserve as much energy.

The KO% is just a numbers game. It's due to his quality of opposition and the regional factor again - the hometown refs in Europe and especially Germany are VERY quick to stop a fight with the loser still on his feet if the fight is one sided. The same fights would go the distance in a lot of cases in the USA.

I'm European by the way, so I'm not biased towards the USA. Just calling it as I see it.

Add to this the fact that referees everywhere stop fights WAAAY earlier nowadays than they used to.
Would a referee nowadays allow Willard to be knocked down seven times in the first round by Dempsey?
Would they allow Floyd Patterson to be knocked down seven times in a single round against Johansson? Or that other guy be knocked down six times by Patterson?

This "awesome punching God" couldn't KO former Super Middleweight Chris Byrd, 37 year old Lennox Lewis, or Timo Hoffmann. :deal

 

Oh that is so stupid! Two of these fight didn't end because of the traumas and Hoffman - there are and always be guys with really iron chin like him.

Though I also agree that this VK's KO statistics is too far from really impressive yet.

oh and a prime Andrew Golota, Tommy Morrison, Ray Mercer, David Tua, Ike Ibubuechi- you know who I mean, not to say there better but they hit harder.

He fought Chris Byrd and couldn't stop him. FACT.
He fought the worst version of Lennox Lewis ever to step in the ring and couldn't stop him. FACT.

 

If we judge punching by the end result, then Vitali IS considered the best puncher in history considering the results 37 wins 36 kos
