Cotto - “I understand that Margarito not only played with my health but he played with health of many boxers,”

Cotto -"He should never step into a boxing ring again"

Cotto - "I have received punishment in my career but I never had my face swell like in that fight."

    THE CONCLUSION TO THE CONTROVERSY

On February 10, 2009, the California State Athletic Commission held a disciplinary hearing, in which they voted 7-0 to revoke the licenses of both Margarito and his trainer, Javier Capetillo. Capetillo testified that he accidentally put illegal pads into Margarito’s hand wraps prior to his bout with Shane Mosley. The revocation means that neither can participate in boxing in the United States for at least one year. After a year, both would have to reapply for their licenses in California, where they would have to go through another hearing. There is no guarantee either would be re-licensed. [8] A California Department of Justice senior criminalist inspected the hand wraps and concluded that the wraps contained sulfur and calcium. The two elements found on the hand wraps, with the addition of oxygen, make a form of plaster called paris.[9] Miguel Cotto commented after the results were released that Margarito should be banned from boxing for life, and that in his fight with Margarito his face swelled worse than he had never experienced previously, implying that Margarito had loaded his gloves for the Cotto fight.

    ---------------------------------

NOW THIS LOOKS SIMILAR TO THE BILLY COLLINS STORY

Collins' eyes had been swollen shut, and the rest of his face was badly swollen as well. Many who saw pictures of Collins after the fight felt it was impossible for the light-punching Resto to inflict such damage on his own.[1]

    THE CONCLUSION TO THE CONTROVERSY

The subsequent investigation by the New York State Boxing Commission concluded that Resto's trainer, Panama Lewis, had removed an ounce of padding from each glove. The fight was ruled a no-contest. Lewis was effectively banned from any official role in American boxing for life, while Resto was suspended for at least a year and never fought again. In 1986, Lewis and Resto were tried and convicted of assault, conspiracy, and criminal possession of a deadly weapon (Resto's fists); prosecutors felt that Lewis' actions made the fight an illegal assault on Collins. Both men served 2.5 years in prison.[2]

    --------------------------------

    So what's next for Margarito?
LAW SUITS, POSSIBILITY OF LOOKING AT A FELONY?

    --------------------------------

These techniques are very deadly and can create some serious long term issues,
Regardless if the padding is taken out or is added on top of the wrap,
    IT'S VERY DANGEROUS!

Cmon, A boxer has to register his hands because they are considered deadly weapons and you're adding on to that? Is that really what a real champion does?

good post. i agree that cotto's face looked way too gnarly after that fight. granted he got hit a lot, but he shouldn't have looked that bad. most of the time in the later rounds (when cotto was getting hit the most by far), margarito wasn't even hitting him hard, he was just scoring and throwing a large amount of slow/light shots and cotto was just too gassed to get out of the way... he was barely even catching him in the first 6.

resto removed the padding from his gloves, margo added what would have turned into something like cement. thats a very dangerous weapon in the hands of a world class fighter. for the layman street fight it would be like connecting brass knuckles to a baseball bat against an unarmed man. potentially deadly stuff.
now i understand if margo was completely ignorant to the illegal wraps because he had been with capetillo for so long and possibly, just maybe, didnt know the proper way to wrap his hands.....?
nah, highly improbable. i say a longer suspension, further investigation. lifetime ban if he's not consistent, wavers in testimony.

He still took his beating like a man and a true warrior but if I found out that ******* had loaded gloves I'd be mad as hell too. But you'd be cool with it?

What I don't get is why, if Margo's defense is that the plaster is just residue from older fights, at least the Cotto fight isn't changed to a NC? That excuse his own team is throwing out there to try and defend the Mosley fight is actually creating more doubt in his prior ones.

When you keep lying, you'll eventually get caught in your words.

    And sadly, he did.

True, but in most fights a boxers eye will swell but if you keep targeting that same area, it'll turn into what Vargas had.

He did take the beating like a man but not to the end.. Some say he quit... BTW that's not my opinion....

Yea Id be mad as hell too and if i wanted to avenge that loss so bad, I would chase him down to fight him even if it meant going to his backyward...

Why don't Cotto just go to mexico for revenge if he's that pissed?

Just look at Izzy and Marquez, those dudes after just a few rounds looked far worst than Cotto, and they are way lighter. Also, once they wiped Cotto's blood off his face, I honestly don't think he was that damaged.

I'm just saying, for eleven rounds, in my opinion, nothing out of the ordinary.

Youve odviously never fought in your life and dont realise what a difference loaded gloves make ! feel the weight behind different glove ounzes and it says it all ....
Cotto for me was too badly beaten hes never been in that state ever ... the realisation of what happened to cotto is now being proven ..Marg is a cheat and should never be given his licence back - cheats dont prosper !
