I truly wish more boxing managers would try to get their fighters in money management classes. A lot of these guys came up dirt poor and have no clue how to control themselves when they get that sort of money. A perfect example would be Iran Barkley, whose flat broke in BK.
Just because a fighter or athlete makes a few million dollars from a contract or gig, where does it state in life that these egotistical fools need to or must go out and buy a 12 bedroom house on 6 acres of land with a 5 car garage, and a stable of horses with a duck pond??? Whatever happened to living a modest lifestyle with a 4 bedroom and 2 bathroom house with a living / dining room area & kitchen, along with a 2 car garage??? MR.BILL
Total agreement. He went from being on top of the world with the Maskaev victory to being completely broken physically and psychologically in his next fight. I think Vitali gets most of the credit personally. He beat Sam like a red headed step child for 9 rounds and it was ****ing easy. And Sam knew it. And then Vitali threw it in his face afterwards. I never believed Peter to be very strong mentally. Too in love with his power, in love the with idea of being champion. The McCline fight really ****ed with him I think. Being dropped like that so early in the fight. And then his chin was never the same after fight with Wladimir anyways. The Maskaev victory reaffirmed his belief in himself, but Vitali took that all away.
What kills me about boxing managers is that they really AREN'T professional money handlers with a vast knowledge of how to properly pay taxes and make good investments..... Every fighter Don King has handled / managed has always ended up broke and in debt, along with tax troubles.... But Don King is NOT the only snake in the basket.... Back in the 1940s, Joe Louis was a fighter / Army veteran..... Louis is not and never was a manager....... What the hell was his manager Mike Jacobs & Company doing for Louis and his financies when he was fighting and doing exhibitions in that decade???? How could the IRS come to Joe Louis in late '49 / 1950 and claim Louis owed ONE MILLION BUCKS?? Was Louis' management that **** poor or crooked???? The Hell??? MR.BILL
I remember a quote by Manny Steward before Wlad fought Peter. He essentially said that Peter had been looking good against C and D level fighters. He went on to say that he believed Peter was being carefully matched and when he stepped up he would lose and lose convincingly. Damn if in Peter's 3 losses that did not end up happening.
Most fighters are ignorant to contracts, backroom dealings, fine print and all that. They figure if their purse is going to be 3 million, they'll see all 3 million of it. A lot of them aren't up to speed n all the finicky details a contract entails. Thus the management company is able to take them for a ride because they put their trust in them. It's sad but look at all the guys that have been taken to the cleaners over the years because they never learned how to properly manage their income. If you take a kid (which is the mentality a lot of boxers have) and give him 8 million dollars, he spends it all on candy and video games. Give a big kid 8 million dollars and he'll spend it all on every car imaginable.
I think that he is done being a threat to the top fighters in the division. He doesn't even punch with authority anymore. He pushing his gloves out there and can't avoid a punch to save his life.
Peter is an excellent example of boxing being "90% mental and 10% physical". He has lost the drive and tenacity that he had, and after the Vitali defeat, he essentially is a fighter that just doesnt believe in himself anymore.
I think peter is pretty much at the end of the line as far as top 10 heavy's go. He will fad into bolivon as mike said, unless peter does some soul searching and takes being a pro boxer... seriously something I doubt.
At least we've now got a fairly big name that we can see fight for free on Friday Night Fights on a regular basis. I expect to see something like Vinnie Maddelone vs. a 255 pound Peter for his next attempt........
Vinnie comes to fight at least. The guy will never be champion, but is a great scrapper, just loves to stand punch. Peter is likely going to need the money in about 6 months, so I expect to see him again.
I can seriously see a 280 pound Peter waddle to the ring in his next fight. I think he has 2 fights left on his deal with Duva. I expect Peter to hang it up after he fulfills those fights.
No, Peter could still make something of himself. Who knows, he could always come in against a beltholder and unsuspectingly KO him. He has the power to do it.
