Seeing Ronald Hearns hit the decked got me to thinking - did he inherit his father's shaky whiskers, magnified to the nth power by a mother who couldn't take a good shot either??

I mean, what's up with this ****?? The old man had some shaky whiskers, and this kid can't take a punch at all!

i think genetics factors into it.. i mean they have the same bone structure and everything so it is not to hard to believe

Sometimes it is genetics, and sometimes it isn't.

Sometimes, it's not your chin, but being able to see every punch, rather. Also, if a guy's stamina is not good, and he gets really tired, the chin becomes even more vulnerable.

That's why a guy you thought had a great chin, all of a sudden gets KO'd for the first time and stuns you, that is why. Also, it's why a guy you thought had a poor chin, but all of a sudden he starts taking good shots, its because he is seeing everything better and has better stamina.

Boxing is an amazing sport, you don't know what will happen next.

I think some people take the term "chin" too literally. I'm no neuroscientist but I think it's to do with the way certain peoples brains react to being shocked. I don't believe the physical structure of someones chin or jaw comes into play too much.. it's just usually the point where the punch lands.

As I boxed some 10 year ago I think I can say something about it. When I started boxing it happend to my on quiet a few occasions that I was knocked down. I gradually learned how to position my head to be able to resist punches. It worked out alright.
However - I will never have a "iron chin". (and I don't plan to - boxing for competition is over for me).

So in conclusion: a boxing chin can be there because of bad head positioning or/and because of genetics. However a "chin" can surely be improved.

Yea its genetic but the genes you inherit and are exhibit from your parents doesn't always match thiers physically, mentally or emotionally.

Bottom line is that Its anatomical.

Wlad never quit! He had a great heart.

If a shot lands clean, fighters go down.

Fighters are human beeings not computer games.

I could think that too! There is no doubt about that some boxers have weaker chin than others, but i dont know how to explain Calzaghes chin, he used to an iron chin, against Kessler he took two huge uppercuts without a blink! but in his latest two fights he was down early, by weaker shots! Maybe the heart, or the hunger to win means something:think
