A somewhat misleading thread title when you consider what I am actually asking. I have just watched Wayne McCullough's fight with Erik Morales, and despite him obviously making a go of it, he was on the receiving end of a lot of hard shots from Morales. Most notably the straight right hand, and a lot of work to the body, perhaps even hurting Wayne at one point or another if your prepared to listen to a very charismatic George Foreman commentate. Considering Wayne McCullough's ability to take Naseem Hamed's best shots at 126lb, and then move back down to 122lb and take the best shots from arguably the second best Super Bantamweight ever, behind Gomez, could Wayne have conceivably saw 12 rounds against the Bazooka?
I don't believe he'd be knocked out, but I think his corner would pull him out. Gomez was a murderous puncher.
I don't think he would last the 12 but i also don't think he would have been sparked knocked out, a TKO victory for gomez
I rate his chin ridiculously high, as in just after Lamotta in a p4p sense. If there's a man who's taking hi the distance it's him, he may be pulled out by the corner though.
I tend to agree. Gomez would have brought a lot more offense than Hamed did when he fought Wayne, and Morales was a great Super Bantamweight, but he didn't have power on the level of a Gomez.
Wayne's crowning glory...the ability to take a punch, ANY punch without going down, would not let him down, even against the greatest 122 pounder of all time in Gomez. Gomez would, however, win every second of every round, and either take an impossibly wide decision, or a compassionate referee would stop the fight in some late round to save McCulloch from unneccesary punishment.
I don't see anything more than a corner stoppage in Gomez's favor, and over 12 even that's not neccessarily a given. Wayne was inhumanly tough.

Gpmez would slaughter McCullough....I like Wayne but surely the ref would have to stop in? As per the previous post, I think Fenech would run Gomez hard, and he had a very good chin (especially down at SBW) but Prime for Prime, I gotta' go with Gomez.
McCullough had a better chin than Fenech. And that's saying something. Wayne's chin is up there with the ATG's, no doubt. I think he lasts the distance with Gomez.
Oh McCullough had an amazing chin, like the Geoge Chuavlo of the smaller weights. But surely Gomez would be tagging him all night with artillery that Wayne never faced. Naz hit him a lot but as we know Naz was a one punch hitter by then, and it almost seemed to me that he was past his prime by then (although he hit the Pocket Rocket with some mean shots no doubt) But Prime Gomez at 122 was a ferocious combination puncher, had great foot/ring movement, K.O power in both fists and most importantly a 100% K.O record at the weight. McCullough never faced anything like him, which is why I think he gets stopped. I rate Naz's punching power VERY high P4P all-time, but I rate Gomez slightly higher.
i think this fight would be similar to the Gomez-Laporte fight. Wayne would take a beating but would last the distance.
