Possibly. He gets hit far too much though. I think his defensive problems stem from the fact he tries to emulate his dad. Problem is Chavez SR was 5′ 7 where as Jr is 6′ 0″ He gets hit more, because their is a bigger target area to hit. If you are tall fight tall. Maximize your advantages not negate them by putting all your weight on your front foot and leaning in. Chavez does not use the jab enough either.
ya..both chavez' fight tomatos until they get like 80-90 fights or so..ridiculous..now that jr has 35 or so fights, it might be time to face someone in the top20
2 words ronald hearns chavez jr and hearns both have heart and skills......but i just dont think both will be elite...... maybe some fringe title..... maybe......
I have nothing against Jr., but after listening to the terrible commentating and hearing the OPEN scoring, which let us know every 4 rounds that the guy kickin' Jr's ASS wasn't even in the fight, I kind of started cheering for the Challenger. Like you said and I put in bold, that chin was just dangling out there begging for an uppercut, and more over JR. just kept dropping his left toward the end of exchanges and a right hand was there for dude all night long. Just didn't see it I guess. Did you watch last nights "show"?
I don't know Ice, after seeing last nights performance by JR., I say anybody top 10 SMOKES his ass.:-(
True dat. Nah i only got to see the Chavez vs Cuello fight so far. Im going to download the Montiel,Soto fights hopefully.
Montiel and Soto handled business.:yep:good I was very unimpressed with Chavez Jr., and the fact the commentators kept saying that his opponent was a scrub, and didn't even have the power to knock out the cans he'd built his record on, sure as **** didn't help for me.
Good, because im a fan of Montiel. I was not impressed with Chavez Jr either , but i do like the kid. I think he has limited ability, but he is good to watch.
Montiel and Soto are why I dropped the cash.:yep Like I said earlier, I have nothing against Jr. at all, but hearing the scoring, and seeing with my own eyes what was going on, I just didn't like it. The guy came to fight, give him his dues.... It was obvious by mid-way, the only chance the dude had was to flat out KO Jr. But what ever.
Yeah that was bull****. That guy was well in the fight. Infact you would of thought he might have gotten a bit discouraged after hearing that ****, but props to the guy he showed lots of heart and came to fight.
dont overlook the fact that he got that strap before even being pro for 4 years....remember, he use to fight up to 6-8 times a year.....sure there is a lot of nobodies on his record early on, but if you think about it, he got his strap around the same time as most gold medalist do :good
Exactly! Jr has had a sizeable height and reach advantage over most of his opponents.......yet he likes to fight like Sr..... on the inside digging hooks and uppercuts...... Jr. is actually a pretty good inside fighter for a fighter his height.....he handles himself well there......but you're right, a smaller fighter has a better chance of finding the target against a bigger fighter there..... I'm a Jr. fan.....and I'm one that has seen most of his fights...... My honest opinion is that he has the tools and the skills to become a world champion.......but a fighter that size is better served keeping distance. .....and Jr. does have the boxing skill to box..... ......all you have to do is look at his fights with Matt Vanda to see my point.... In the first Vanda fight, Jr brawled with Vanda in a give and take war that had Jr. at the end exhausted and ready to fall over from exhaustion.... Its the give and take type of fight that Vanda needed to be competitive.....this fight is the fight that Chavez' own people from his hometown booed the decision. There was an outrageous score by one of the judges, and the people did'nt like the fact that Chavez in exhaustion got battered for the last 2 rounds of the fight. The rematch with Jr. keeping distance, using his jab, manuevering the ring and boxing, saw Jr. virtually shutout the same Matt Vanda in the rematch. Its the difference between giving in to the Mexican pride pressure and use more brawling tactics in a give and take war.......and being able to adapt using your physical height and reach and being able to box the same fighter who'd otherwise be competitive in a give and take affair. Jr. has both the inside and outside skills to challenge for World titles.....what he's got to learn is how to balance the two so that he takes full advantage of his own height and reach and physical skills. The one worry I have for Jr. is his cardio conditioning. Its just not at the world class level yet.....and last night was a prime example of it. He's gassing late in fights and losing steam on his shots. Imo, he needs both, more roadwork conditioning and heavybag work so that his punches dont look labored down the stretch of a fight. As one that is paying attention, I believe that the one major thing that Jr. has to work at before challenging for a world title is his conditioning. I believe he has the skill, and the heart to become a World Champion!
The only reason I hate this guy is because he shouldn't get this exposure and PPV fights. I feel sorry for other way better fighters that bust their ass up just to get not even the half of what this kid gets.
