Would a Prime Hopkins have Kod Pavlik?

    rewatching the Pavlik fight.........still thought what a superb performance it was....but I though the Real B-Hop only showed up in the last 2 rnds, he really bullied Pavlik to the body and punished him up top standing his ground.


    That was the Hopkins of the Trinidad fight + before.

    I think the old BHopwould have forced a stoppage as he would have been more aggresive early on.

    yes and anyone who thinks he isn't a very faded fighter is full of it IMO.

    A better question would be, would the old B-Hop Ko'ed Pavlik and stopped Calzaghe?

    I dont think he would stop Calzaghe, but I do think he would have beat up Calzaghe.


    If you watch the way Calzaghe punched in that fight there was no method, he closed his eyes most ofthe time and threw those horrible technically poor fllurrys. I think he felt Bernard natural strength on more than one occasion.

    I though Joe won by 114-113, only because Hopkins was too cautious ala Jermain taylor fights and ran out of steam, I dont blame Calzaghe for turning a rematch down even Wales, he knows it would be a risky fight even with a past it B Hops. The Pavlik fight would have scared him of even more.

    I think the last 2 rnds vs Pavlik he was emotially charged to prove people wrong. The was Hopkins spoke about Calzaghe before their fight...indicated that he didnt respect Joes credentials...i think he underestimated Joes a crafty customer.


    Manny steward said something prior to the Pavlik broadcast

    "Bernard is said he is going back to his old Philly style"

    Hopkins from the late 90s would have knocked Pavlik the **** out.

    I agree with what you say about Calzaghe's technically poor flurries and closing his eyes, etc. I had it 114-113 for Hopkins

    I disagree. Look at the Hopkins in his prime step up fights. The first fight with Echols. Against Holmes. Eastman. Joppy.

    The only time he ever stepped up and stopped a big time opponent was in the Trinidad fight. The remainder of the time it was very sporadic.

    Benn would've knocked him out, but Hopkins? I don't think so.

    No, and definitely not.

    Hopkins had his prime at 160. He bulked up for fight night at MW just as much as Pavlik, so at the 160 weight limit, he would not have outweighed Kelly like he did at 170. He was 15 pounds heavier and threw everything at him still not producing a knockdown. And you can't say he didn't score, or was slower or anything, he was landing sick combos in the 12th. Also, he knocked down Calzaghe, Tarver and hurt Winky, something you don't see too often, so I think it's safe to say he didn't lose power 40+, in fact, due to outweighing Winky, Calzaghe and Pavlik, he had an advantage in the ring.

    And still couldn't stop Kelly.

    I think he would have stopped Pavlik maybe not KOd....i think the beating would have been more consistant.

    Maybe he would have stopped Pavlik, maybe not. Either way he is all wrong for Pavlik and any version of Hopkins wins the fight.

    i feel it would be close but hopkins would win via sd, kelly is a far better fighter than he showed on that night
