ASInfo: - Roy, thanks for the interview. I would want to ask if you really mean what You said to me before this interview. Do You really want to fight Adamek? Roy Jones jr: - I was deadly serious. I will prove it to you. Minutes after our first talk i got in touch with people who are my closest advisors in these matters. Each one said the same thing. This fight will electrify everone - begining form big TV stations, ending on my present and former fans and polish fans of Adamek. I am not joking only about two things - boxing and money. - Tomek is the cruiserweight IBF world champion, and you, after your last great fight against Omar Sheika in up to 175 category, were wondering about going one category lower. How to reconcile it? - I want to fight for the Pole's cruiserweight title, not for some made-up trophies. When i got the heavyweight title from John Ruiz I weighed 193 lb. I want to fight Adamek at around this weight. Now it's around 185 lb. It's no problem going back to my gym in Pensacola and add few lbs of muscles. - Have you seen Adamek in action? - It's very good, very determined boxer. Has strong, fast punch, is very good in counter-attack. Great boxer with big heart. Everybody wants to watch him. It would be a great fight of two different but very spectacular styles. - Have you heard about Adamek's plan to fight Hopkins? - I ve heard but I didnt believe that Hopkins wanted to fight him. He always do some stuff. He supposed to give me a rematch, everything was agreed, and at the last moment he changed the conditions. Tell me, why Adamek should fight Hopkins? Everybody knows that he (Hopkins) doesn't want this fight. He (Adamek) should fight somebody who beat Hopkins - me!. I would want to get world title in 5th weight category and during negotiations i wouldnt play hide and seek with them like Bernard. I am sure that for TV stations like HBO or Showtime, fight Adamek vs. Roy Jones Jr. would be more atractive than Hopkins vs. Adamek. I have much bigger fan base than Bernard. It's not even comparable. My and polish fans... It would be a great atmosphere there. I like to show off before the fight, but I always remain a gentleman. I wouldnt mind fighting in Newark or Chicago with white-red flags waving everywhere. I like Poles. I were always getting on with Andrew Golota. I will also get on with Adamek. - Tomek would want to fight in the end of June / beginning of July. It's ok to you? - You know what? Perfectly! Now we only have to come to terms and I start training. Five world titles in five weight categories. How many boxers can say it to themselves? If Adamek agrres, I will willingly try... * Content of this interview was given to Ziggy Rozalski (advisor and co-promoter of Adamek) - It's very very atractive rival. I think that Showtime or HBO won't make any trouble. I am getting down to this... - said Rozalski. Translated from polish. Great forum BTW!! I am reading a lot of old threads. i am boxing fan since i remember and its really entertaining just to recall some stuff from the past
You know what? With Johnson and Jones both pushing for Adamek, Hopkins might change his mind and come up with a better offer knowing others could get this fight first. So we should thank them going public with this. Funny thing is neither Glen or Roy ever thought fighting Adamek, but when Benard come up with the idea only to make a stupid offer, suddenly they are started chasing the same guy. BTW horrible fight for Jones, very dangerous. Lacy then Taylor/Froch then retirement sounds a lot better.
either that or glen johnson. or jeff lacy at 168. or jermaine. or move up to heavy. you're talking about him and that's the point of it all. he's not going to fight adamek. he cant truly mean it.
wow adamek? he already lost his reflexes, even though his speed is still present. Once Adamek catches him, hes done. Froch would not be a bad idea though.
what really urks people is the clear fact that jones is not as shot as people thought he was.. i.e trinidad and sheika 2 excellent victories that clearly demonstrated this,of course hes not 29 anymore but hes still a top fighter with the ability to adapt to his decline in reflex etc just like hopkins... still though no credence is given to calzaghes victory over him by certain groupies through sheer delusion ,hence laughable comments like retire roy the big bad wolf is on to you, your a virtual cabbage nowadays etc but the display by the welsh lad demonstrates to me what an amazing fighter at 36 he actually was ... jones should rematch hopkins and end it there.
I think this would be a better fight, more exciting to be precise than Hopkins-Adamek....Besides, who wants to see two men hugging for 36mins??
