I must admit ive never been one for these internet forums, but having roomed with Jeff Thomas for 3 days in Scotland i certainly picked up an interest into what was being said on here. I thought id come on to add my bit about Friday nights fight! Obviously all of us are exstreamly dissapointed with the result. I can promise you Mike gave his all but he just cant pull the trigger like he once could. We had a 10 week training camp for this fight and everything went to plan. Infact i have been doing various fitness tests on Mike over the last year and his results during the last few weeks compleatly exceeded my expectations. We had top quality sparing, and Mike was making the weight perfectly, we even had the BBBC at the gym every 2 weeks making sure everything was spot on. It was just simply the case that on the night Mike was beaten by the better man. One thing i can promise you is that is it for Mike. No more talk of 2 fights to get upto 50. Mikes legacy is 2 time British, WBU World and BBBC young boxer of the year. He doesnt need two more fights to pad his CV. There is life after competative fighting. We will keep Mike in the gym as a trainer, he is fantastic with the youngsters who idolise him. And you will struggle to find a more popular person within the boxing circles. Mikes been a superb servant to British Boxing. Alot of people dont like the way he conducts himself at press confrences etc but i can promise you thats not the real Gomez, just look at the interest that confrence caused and the fight was a compleate sell out. Mike simply knows how to play the game. Alot of the storys wrote are compleate noncence aswell for example i just read on here a guy said he saw Mike drinking at the Khan Barrera fight, thats a compleate lye! Mike was with me the whole night and we had a check weigh inn the day after so that was compleatly impossible... As for the fight itself i have to say i was really impressed with Ricky Burns. I attended his last fight so i knew he hit alot harded than his record suggests. Hes a fantastic boxer who will definatly progress further. He is also Huge at the weight, how he can be that muscular at 5,10 is phenominal. Credit has to go to Billy Nelson who is the ultimate proffesional, and an absolute pleasure to deal with. With the stable he has now up there in Scotland he is definatly becoming one of the best trainers in Britain. We wish Ricky and Billy all the very best!!! My own personal highlight of the night was Jeff 'The hat Catcher' If Mike had shown half the reflexes Jeff showed in getting that sombrero back we would have a new Commonwealth Champion!!!
well done kev . it would be great too see mike as a trainer because it would be terrible if mike was not around the sky sports cameras anymore as he is truly one of the best characters in the sport .
Ha ha my pal Alex Morrison. To be fair hes is old school and set out with the intention to wind us up. It worked!!! Although i shouldnt have taken the bate i still say he shouldnt have said what he said. But all that counts is it was all forgotten in the dressing room after the fight.
Great stuff Kev. This is what makes boxing so great. :good Although I can only speak for myself, I reckon most on here will echo my sentiments when I say this - please congratulate Mike on a fantastic career and thank him for all the thrills, the spills and the great memories. He gave us a hell of a ride, and I wish him a long, happy and healthy retirement. Thank you Michael Gomez. Win or lose you certainly brought some excitement to British boxing. :happy :happy :happy Good show too Jeff. Hat's the way to go! (Sorry! )
Now that Gomez is retiring, do you have any other fighters in your camp we can look forward to seeing?
Great words, nice of you to come on. Was nice saying hello afterwards. Was either you or Jeff in the pic, Jeffs fast feet i guess were on a par with his hands that night. :yep In all seriousness, didnt really wanna hassle ya's for pic's etc, Mike looked tired, yet still upbeat. As i says in a previous post, all three of ya's were top class Cheers :good

Welcome to my humble abode. ESB is the online home of boxing. Glad to have you along with the rest - Buncey, Dodson, Thomas Gomez gave us fights like Arthur and Khan, to name a few, so he'll forever have a place in boxing history.
