Great fight here. I'd never seen this one before. Mauriello catches Louis cold with a perfect right hand but went in to finish it and instead was on the receiving hand of a knockdown by a DEVASTATING left hook... beautiful to see in slow motion replay the end. I also like Louis' use of the right uppercut.

It's not often that a #1 contender gets blasted out so early.

One more thing. Mauriello is listed as 195lbs in the film (198 1/2lbs at boxrec) but looks bigger to me, in fact i'd guess he weighed as least as much as Louis, who was 212lbs here, if i didn't know any better.

This is one of my favourite Louis fights.

I know how it is going to end but I can still feel the tension.

Nice to see that again Mauriello was originally a LH,under 6 ft tall, he got a couple of bit parts in movies as a heavy ,you can see him ,along with Tony Galento as hoods in On the Waterfront, backing up Lee J Cobb as he fronts Brando. Mauriello's comment on the fight was funny ," I had him but I got too godamned careless"! The broadcasting company did not appreciate it!

It was a good ko, (I have the fight, slient, no commantary, Ring intros, fight, replays, Louis declear winnering.)

Not sure I put that on Louis's top fights though. It was just other day in the office for the most part. Sure Louis was stun. But I enjoy the Godney fights, Pastor II, Conn I, and others before I put this fight in Joe's top ten imo, base on what I seen on film that is.

The second Pastor fight is the strongest argument against the view that Louis couldnt deal with mobile boxers stylisticaly.

He handeled Pastor prety methodicaly and it was only the liberal ruels on alowing fights to continue in that period that prevented it from being an early blowout.

I am sure Louis foxes in the first round to lull Pastor into a false sense of security.

I've had this on file for yrs....... What's the biggie? Louis was rocked by Mauriello off the bat, but quickly regrouped and parked T.M. like a Cadillac............... Peace.......

    Hindsight is a wonderfull thing.

You have to put yourself in the minds of the fans at ringside as the fight unfolded.

I bet they were on the edge of their seats!

and some turkey's try to say this version of Louis Walcott fought was finished....I say to them Hogwash. Watch this fight! Louis could still throw lethal combinations!

Pontius, Mauriello was not # 1 contender. I believe Elmer Ray was, Maurielly was somehow # 2 though, despite not beating walcott, murray or bivins.

I tend to like all one round fights that are atleast somewhat competitive. In this fight Louis was rocked early and he came back to knock down his challenger almost instantly, showing his amazing recuperative powers.

He could deal with them since he had wins over Walcott, Conn, Pastor, etc. even if he had trouble.

I do think that movers were the worst match-up for him stylistically but then again that's the same for almost everybody.

Louis always found a way though, in his prime.

Mauriello was on a long string of knockouts when he fought Louis.

EDIT: Sorry for triple post, is there any way to delete your posts?

This was a great win and Mauriello was pretty good, but Mauriello was totally unworthy of the # 1 spot. He had a good string of knockouts over white heavyweights, but he did not beat any of the four elite heavyweights of the mid 1940s Walcott, Ray, Murray, or Bivins to justify a # 1 ranking. I'll tell ya, if that had been Violent Ray or Murrays right hand instead of Mauriello, Louis might have been in for a Nap.

I was not aware Pastor vs Louis 1 was on film. Are you sure you have seen it?
