Floyd: One more big win and he is a legend if he isn't called one already.

Pac: If he defeats Floyd...he is an instant legend.

J.M.M: If he defeats Floyd he comes close to being one.

Hop: A win over Adamek, rematch over Cal or Dawson makes him a legend. Hop is very close though, if not one already.

Abraham: If he beats Pavlik, and then goes on to SMW, and defeats any of the top champions and reigns a bit, he can come close to being one.

Calzaghe: If he were to come back and defeat Dawson, he takes a step closer to becoming a legend.

Pav: If he beats Abraham, then goes to SMW and defeats Kessler and a couple of other top fighters and goes to 175, he can become one.

Hatton: If he were to beat Floyd in a rematch, and two to three other top fighters say Cotto, Williams, or another star on the scene, he could become one. Highly doubtful though.

Izzy Vasquez: If he beats Lopez or Caballero, and then ebats john at FW, he becomes one.

Cotto: If he beats Floyd and two other big names at WW or SMW, he comes close.

Williams: If he beats Winky first, and Floyd, and then goes on to beat Pav or Abraham, he becomes one.

If you can list any other fighters who can become one, within 5 fights, list them. This fight has to already be an established pro, not up and coming.

I think you're mixing up 'Legend' with 'Icon'.

In the field of boxing, three of these guys will probably make it into the top 50 fighters of all time. Another one (possibly) but it's a long shot. One of them is amongst the ten most dominant fighters of all-time at his weight (at the lower end no doubt, but there)

You also set targets for them. To be honest some of these guys could fight a constant set of mandatory challengers, another rival champion, one more top P4P fight and they'd be a legend. They all have decent resumes thus far, and some are only a few more big victories away from top 100 ATG status, for example Marquez, who if he goes on to beat the winner of Pac-Hatton decisively will surely sneak into the lower end of the top 100. He will have a good resume and at least one win over someone who was on a Hell of a streak at the time as well as lots of other 'decent' wins.

When you think of what some 'ATG's' have achieved, for example Aaron Pryor, who I'm a massive fan of, but what does his resume amount too? It doesn't stop him from being one of the top 100 fighters that have ever stepped in the ring, and I don't think many would dispute that.

In terms of genuine 'Icon' status, Pac nearly has that crossover appeal (i.e your Grandmother would know who he is) With a win over Hatton and then a Floyd fight, that could happen. Floyd tried to do it by doing 'Dancing With The Stars' but it didn't work. Great fighter, but not revered in the same way Ali is of The Fabulous Four are.

If Manny Pacquiao wins the title at 140lb by beating the best Junior Welterweight in the world on May 2nd, I will have to concede to his greatness.

Floyd needs a big win against a great prime opponent, and then perhaps he could be called a legend. He still needs to shut the **** up, though.

Juan Manuel Marquez is still lacking a signature win, he was hard done by against Manny, but the fact of the matter is that he didn't get the verdict on either occasion.

I'm not sure what your version of legend is but in my mind Hops already is a legend.

Floyd has legendary skills so I guess you could say he's a legend already.

If JMM beat Floyd that would be pretty legendary.

I'd be undesided aobut Joe if he came back and beat Dawson, mostly because I'm pretty undesided about Dawson. Part of me thinks that the only reason he's a lightheavy wieght was to get away from the serious log jam of talent at the top of the SMW division....so if the best from that division came up and whoooped his ass would that really be just a big deal?

Pac if pac beats hatton he's a legend...pretty simple. The guy first won a title at flywieght (112 lbs). Doesn't really matter howmany times your got beat in between, beating the crap out of the clear man at 140 lbs ten years later is pretty legendary.

Abraham will never be a legend, he could beat KP 100 times and that wouldn't change. Well I take that back. Abraham could become a legend but he would have to beat everyone from MW to LHW.....which ain't gonna happen.

If Pav can do what you say here then he would be pretty legendary. Him and AA basically have the same path to legend status.

Hatton would have to beat floyd to be a legend. And a win over Cotto wouldn't hurt either. I'd never expect a guy with T-rex arms to fight a guy like Williams. But after beating Manny, if he would fight Otiz and Campbel and a few of the other top young fighters at 140 that would make him a 140 lb legend. I think because of his build he's just so limited at higher wieght divisions that it would be unreasonable to except him to be successful above 140 lbs. That might mean that he couldn't become a true legend but it doesn't mean that he can't become a legend at his wieght division.

Good post. You lost me with the "genuine 'icon' status. Actually, everyone knows Floyd hate him or love him. My Grandmother doesn't know Pac lol...and Pac doesn't have that crossover status yet. I doubt he will reach it without a fight with a Floyd type challenge. Fans would be shocked/stunned if Pac were to pull off the upset over Floyd. Nobody would call Floyd any greater than what he is if he beat Pac. Floyd's biggest challenge lies else where.

Whether we like him or not Floyd has crossover appeal. Most people know who he is wich is saying alot for a boxer.

Even Oscar wasn't everywhere after the buzz of the Olympics died down a bit.
