Me again So I've been boxing training since January and a few weeks ago I went to a show to watch the boxers from our club. I never realised how much holding/ grappling/ pushing was involved. Apart from when you are sparring how do you train for this part of the fight? And what can you do to make sure your not gonna get thrown around in there? Ta
Two things which I like to do to help in this area are; Bag shoulders - if you have access to the 'bodysnatcher' type bag, stand against it with your lead shoulder and shove it off with your shoulder as hard as you can, remain in your stance and when it returns slip and let it hit your rear shoulder, upon impact shove it again and repeat this drill for 1 minute at a time. Sandbag wrestling - Exactly as it sounds. Make a sandbag, anywhere between 100-150lbs should do. Pick it up from the floor, throw it around, over your shoulder, clean and press it etc. Both will help with your 'inside strength' tremendously. Edit: One other thing that will help is, if you have a rugby club near by(?), join up and play. All of my fighters play Rugby, and none of them ever get pushed around or overpowered in the ring
Bodi, Not sure what bag you mean, the heavy bag? I'd like to try Rugby but not sure how often I could go with boxing training and family commitments.
Rugby - my fighters train once per week and play once per week, in addition to their boxing training, as do I. If you could find time to fit it into your schedule, do so. Bodysnatcher bag - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SkXUdiYiog&feature=channel_page You can get this type of bag (filled) from ringside.com, alternatively, I got mine (unfilled) from Amber sporting goods, it was cheaper to buy unfilled as I had to have it sent to the uk, it was about £60 if my memory serves me correct. As you can see by the clip - apologies for the quality, they are very good for inside work.
I like that idea mate. In fact I think things like that should take precedence over boring drills, because it brings out a competitive side in people, making them go harder. For example you could do boring and repetitive ladder drills for agility, but you could also play tennis for an hour.
When they hold try and hold them so there neck is close to your shoulder and jab your shoulder into their throat.
