Chavez was great between 130 to 140 pounds............. HOWEVER! At 147, he became human..... Chavez saw the last of his peak in 1993................. by '94, at age 32, he slipped down a notch or so................ Chavez really LOST both fights to Franklin Randall in 1994....... Funny thing, Randall is a year older than Chavez......... Cheers.... MR.BILL:yep
Mr. Bill let's stick to 140 and what is your opinion on that weight if the had fought. Remembering that Duran was a king at 135 and skip 140 to beat the P4P best in SRL. I see Duran winning by decision at 140 and I am not touching 135.
I was just referring to the fact that you said, "Duran would get under Chavez' skin by trash-talking and take advantage with his power shots." I think trash-talkers motivated Chavez more than anything. I tend to lean to the fact that Chavez never lost in his prime the way Duran did to De Jesus. Either way, I respect your opinion; however, I say Chavez up until 147. Those fights wouldn't be a cake walk for either fighter, and they would leave a lot of themselves in one fight than most fighters would in a triology. P.S. Rosario (R.I.P) talked a lot of trash before the Chavez fight, especially about Mexicans.
Duran would really be relentless with his trash talk and even when the fight would be over, he would continue. I don't know if he ever liked any of his opponents. I did not know that of Rosario. It could have been the marketing for a PR vs Mexican. I am going to look into to that. I mean a "0" is always great, but the best loose. Chavez was already slipping when he got his first loss. All those fights and all that training takes a toll on your body. One of the best left hooks to the body.
Yes he would. Duran preferred that you stayed in front of him, but he could also box as well. Duran was just better at brawling with a touch of boxing.
Duran would not catch hell from Arguello at 135...sorry. I just don't see this fight as being competitive because Duran was a true lightweight with a big right hand. Right after right would find Arguello's chin, and duran's body attack would wilt Arguello who would not be able to hurt Duran at 135. Arguello beat Olivares, but Olivares was past his best also. Arguello's has one heck of a resume though, but he beat smaller men than Duran. The lightweights Arguello beat do not compare to the lw's Duran beat.
This is what the Fleaman said..."Alexis preferred to fight inside fighters. He was past his best at LW though and Duran was at his best, good decision for Duran though he would have to take Hell to win". Flea says nothing about Arguello being good inside. Flea says that Arguello preferred to fight inside fighters. Arguello loved aggressive guys who attacked so he could counter them and keep them at the end of his punches.
Well, Christ only knows why Duran gave a **** about 140 and the title there in the late 70s........ In my eyes, Duran would've smoked Tony Cervantes, however, he would've struggled with an 18 year old slick Willie Benitez in 1977 or so...... I'm guessing the $$$ was **** or not there at all...?? Anyway, if Duran was a proven animal / legend at 135 pounds, then in my book, he certainly would've and could've been king at 140 pounds.... All bull**** aside, the Duran who mauled SRL in Canada in June of '80 was a 145 lb. man of terror at age 29..... That was the very tail end of Duran's true prime........ By the rematch with SRL in Nov. of '80, Roberto Duran was ***** whipped and content to live off his legacy and newfound millions in the bank........ It didn't last long..... Duran is a family man and a spendaholic.......... I thought Duran looked lousy to ordinary at 154 against Nino Gonzalez and Luigi Minchillo in 1981........ And, come 1982, Duran was weak and un-adjusted at 154 for the likes of "Benitez & Kirk Lang." Hell, Duran was even terrible at 157 for Jimmy Batten on the walk-out card of "Pryor-Arguello." LOOK! If Duran was able to make 135 for DeJesus in 1978, he could've been successful at 140 in 1979 / '80.......... He CHOSE not to do so............. By 1979, Duran had discovered Food, *****, Beer, Coke, Money, Weed & Farting around............. Duran can claim he never touched some of these substances, but I know goddamn well he did indulge throughout the yrs.................... I'm glad that Duran was smart enough to have never been caught with his pants down..... PLUS! He has Amigos' who watch out for him......... Cheers........ MR.BILL:deal
:good:good:good Also, to the guy who posted the Rooney and Chacon vids....Chacon was famously an inside/brawler-type, and WTF has ROONEY GOT TO DO WITH ANYTHING?!?!?!? He was a good trainer, but an unremarkable fighter. Arguello was past prime, and, also, he was a peek-a-boo fighter who liked to get inside. Proving my point yet again. Also, Alexis had a great uppercut on the inside, so yes, he could fight there. Seriously, pulling Fleaman up on Arguello (his hero and favourite fighter of all time) ain't a great way to get a point across :good
People forget that Arguello could fight inside also because their last image is Arguello being beaten by a very good boxer and power puncher in the naturally bigger Pryor.
no that picture was taken at the end of 2008 at some card on the east coast I think. That is Hearns at 50 years old and Duran at 57. Duran always had the excuse he did not train for fights. What is so surprising?
