is darren still fighting....he seems to be only half hearted about the sport...he should call it a day

 

imo its a BIG yes look at the ams success I have no doubt this will translate to the pros in the coming years as has been said before boxing gyms are full to capacity.

Unfortunately we need more Pro gyms down south.

 

surely one city centre gym could be opened i dublin?


do it like gleasons and let rich city boys come in and train to keep costs down

theres enough top am's and pros about to make it viable surely?

 

I was thinking about that yesterday, there was a thread about the best gyms worldwide, that got me thinking about Breens gym and how successful they are. You have guys from the south like Andrew Murray who are now training up in Belfast when the obvious thing would be for someone to set up a professional gym in Dublin and get the best trainers available.
If you notice, it is the guys that are going to the States who's careers are stalling - Lee, Duddy, Moore, etc, while the guys staying in Ireland, Dunne, McCloskey, Rogan, are doing great. I am sure a lot of the up and comers would be delighted to have a professional gym to train in rather than having to relocate to the US or England or to have to travel up north.
It is what is needed, and even with the state of the economy, I can't see a venture like that failing as Irish boxing is so popular and is going from strength to strength. Would I be right in saying that Steve Collins opened a gym a while back?

 

I actrually talked to andy about that when i was interviewing him the other month

it wasnt steve it was roddy I heard its gone under but they were focusing on the rich boy market.

although they still have kids training in there im not sure what the story is.

 

story is fellas the gym has gone under, i was training there once or twice a week with a few friends i used to train with from the travelling community

and yes it was roddy who opened it, originally it was destined for white collar folk although it didnt really work out, (ill come back to this later in my post), it was a great club good facilities plenty of room but the rent was too high and money coming in wasnt enough to keep up

as time went on less shows were put on and less people turning up although the gym became fond of the travelling community as different families use to come in and were able to do their own thing without being told what to do, famous travellers from around dublin like Barney Mcginley trained there everyday and i was lucky enough to spar the big fella, im sure you guys have heard of him he was on that RTE show on bareknuckle fights (he is all over youtube)

i must say i dont think these gyms will ever work out as i dont think rod was getting much funding from the government, also it didnt have the feel of a real club where everyone helps each other out it was just groups of lads coming in doing their own thing. It was more like a fitness club with boxing ratjher than an amateur club. All of a sudden then it was "gym is closed down boys" although roddy is trying to open up a gym in corduff blanchardstown where i presume government funding will be available as corduff is a rough spot, roddy said its a big place and has the potential to fit 4 rings into the place

back to the idea of a pro club opening up, i cant really see it happening most pro's will train in the amateur clubs around the city centre where there is great sparring, clubs like savious and arbour hill

as for clubs for white collar boxing i just dont think the market is there, its known fact that clubs succeed better in working class estates and areas and most need some sort of government funding, im pretty sure white collar boxers are a little bit weary of rubbing shoulders with inner city young lads from sherrifer

 

What did Andy have to say about that?

 

..and, maybe, have some mixed shows at this level..amatuers and pros on the same shows ??

 

I agree with what you're saying and I guess I should say that there should be a professional gym in any other major city in the south, not just Dublin. Murray was just an example of a guy from the South who's only option to train in a professional gym is to train in Belfast.
I also agree 100% about Peters concentates on Dunne too much to the deteriment of the other boxers he manages, but Dunne is where the money's at for the time being.

 

He was saying he'll always have to travell for good sparring so it makes no odds to him!
