How many fighters get one fight in HW divison and then fight for a title?

It's gonna be far worse than Sam Peter, because Haye can't even take the punches of old cruisers and supermiddles very well. He's gonna get annihilated, and it couldn't happen to a more deserving guy.

Fitzsimmons went straight from MW to the HW title, I think. He had had a fight with Choynski, though, that boxrec listed him as 175. Anyway, you may have to go back 120 years after Roy...

 

well it isnt that big of a deal realy
okay he could of had maybe 1 more fight before he jumped in the deep end
but come on give him a break who else does this
most the chumps ride around knocking tomatoe cans out for 20-30 fights before they go for the big one
hes got balls, something boxing could do with alot more these days

let me just add this if haye doesnt beat wlad, nobodey in the division will beat him
he has the best chance from all the heavy's simple as that
and if he gets sparked out (which is a very good probability he will) then i will be first to accept that the klitchkos are the grand daddy's of all the heavyweights

 

Would you complain if the junior welterweight champ moved to welter and got a shot in his first fight? No

Would you complain if the Light middleweight champ lost his belts but moved up to middle and fought for a title in his first fight? No

I can go on but I don't need to!!!

 

In a way, I don't see it as that big a deal. Guys jump classes to title shots at lower weights all the time. It's a bit bigger jump in weight here (from 200 to, say, 220), but the principle is the same.

Haye takes too much **** on the "he doesn't deserve it front" (really, who the hell else does? Povetkin, sure, but he hasn't even had 20 fights) and Wlad takes too much **** on the "he's scared/doesn't want the fight" front. It's going to be a long couple of months putting up with this kinda crap from both sides.

And I agree - Haye does have the best chance of the crop at the moment. It'd be cool if people could shut the f*ck up for a while and just anticipate the best HW title scrap we've had in years.

 

This is just how poor the division is right now, Haye was actually ranked in the top 10 current heavyweight list even before fighting Haye, so he was ranked for beating a journeyman and talking smack.

The division is this poor right now so this shouldn't be surprising. Above all, Haye wants it.

 

-Billy Conn moved directly up to fight a guy named Joe Louis (you might have heard of him) and nearly won until he got stupid enough to trade with him.

-Roy Jones moved right into a fight with Ruiz and won.

-Michael Spinks went immediately from light heavyweight to fight champion Larry Holmes and Spinks won too.


There is PLENTY of precedent for a champion in a lower weight class to move up and challenge a champion in a higher weight class without going through the ranks of that higher division.

 

People need to calm down with all this talk about Haye not deserving his shot at Wlad. It is a stupid thing to say because it just implies that you dont acknowledge his achievements and status at CW.

Joe calzaghes first move to light heavyweight was for a world title,

David Haye may not have a granite chin, but lets face it he is exciting and has knockout power in both hands.

The difference being all those guys were legitimate top fighters with long resumes before they made that jump.
