Irish Boxing

Well one thing is for sure, there's gonna be a lot of young lads who want to emulate Bernard Dunne and be a World Champion boxer, I remember when i first moved here and there was no under age soccer team in the town so me and my brother set one up. that would have been around 98/99, Things were going along OK we had under 14 and under 16 squads but come the end of July 2002 and we had an extra 20 lad's at each age group, all after being inspired by the Irish National team in the World Cup, we had to set up an Under 12 team as well, That may not sound like a lot but it's just a small town and that was probably happening all over the country.
The same thing could happen with Bernard especially if he hangs on to the Belt, I recently heard an interview with him and he's spotting young lads on the street shadow boxing.

Anyway sorry for banging on, I'm glad to see the Amateur's scene seems to be in good health, i haven't got any knowledge of Amateur boxing as I've always followed the Pro's, Maybe Doug.ie has the right Idea following on from Brian Peters Dublin card, Putting amateur's on pro cards will give them great exposure to the like's of myself and many others, I have to admit i enjoyed watching Katie Taylor, Paddy Barnes and Ray Moylette although i thought Moylette got a gift in his bout (What's the story with Amateur scoring?)

 

Thats alright mate, if people did not bang on it would not be much of a forum The sport can only improve in popularity with the success of Dunne, Egan and co.:yep

 

seeing as it was mentioned...wasn't the first round of the ray moylette fight one of the best rounds of boxing you could hope to see....whatever about the scoring, what a great display of boxing...a cr.acker!!

i hate a lot of things, almost everything, about prizefighter - apart from the exposure it gives some of the boxers...

what do the rest of you lads thing of it ??

 

taylor had an exhibition fight after the o2 down in bray and so many people showed up they had to be turned away!

anyone any inside scoop on how well the tickets for the rogan show and the lindsay show are selling?

hope two big sell outs encourage two big promoters to come back time and again

 

i can't deny that without it we wouldnt have rogan now being mentioned along with the top heavyweights in the world...he was mentioned twice last night during the povetkin fight...so i am happy about that...and also what you say ardy about people sitting up and taking notice..
but, my problem with it is that it takes away the skillful side of boxing and encourages just fighting, like what i imagine the old boxing booths were...
take the ted bami v lomax final, you had bami with a broken nose walking across a ring to meet michael lomax who had stitches in his head, both lads fooked out from 2 previous tear-ups in as many hours...to me thats not boxing...if i want to see lomax against bami i want them in good shape, prepared for each other with game plans if appropriate, and for it to be a proper, fair bout...
boxer no.1 has to be prepared at the start of the night to face many different styles...if he makes it to the final and ends up facing say, a southpaw, and he has never fought a southpaw before, he is at a disadvantage...in a normal bout he has time to prepare...i maybe wouldnt be so against it if the result didnt end up on their pro records...
i dont mind the contender format where there is a week between bouts, but this 3 fights in 3 hours isnt sport for me..
