I'll have to some what disagree with that. Look at Mike Tyson, man was a beast. Quite possibly the best actually, but when his trainer died we all know he went down hill
You should note that Mayweather Sr. provoked him to say this. Mayweather Sr. said, they will KO Pac in 5 rounds so he is just trying to respond. Roach all along said Pac KO Hatton in 9 rounds.
Its differrent when you have a trainer who has one or two fighters and he's been with them through their amateur careers or through there pro careers. Guys like Birmingham and Mayweather sr are the best in the game when it comes to mind. What they've did with two fighters are exceptional ... Birmingham what he's done with Wright or what Mayweather Sr did with Jr.
Watch Pac fight in '03-'04, and watch him in '07-'08. A blind man could see the difference he has made in Pacquiao. Seriously, how anyone can deny this just completely beggars belief.
Definitely i agree. I ve always thought that Roach was overrated.. He's certainly not on IGnacio Beristain's level who took two fighters from scratch ( Marquez brothers ) and turned them into world champions... ONe's a sure HOFer and the other is on his way to an ATG legend status... Roach is fortunate to have trained fighters who were already good when they went under him.. Beristain > Roach Roach is on Goosen's level.
how can the guy be over-rated when he has already produced 17 world champs starting with virgil hill?! that's why he's already in the HOF even if he's still active. plus, the guy was able to achieve all of this while battling parkinsons. these achievements have to account for something...
How he complete changed Pacquiao is nothing, huh? He made a fighter who was one-dimensional into what you see today and P4P#1 to boot, not enough?
Pac hasn't improved on anything ... he's still flawed and his right hand is still in question. Roach hasn't did anything, he was the first American coach available during Pacquiao's US debut and he's stuck with him, Pacquiao has done more for Roach than the other way around. There isn't any other fighters that Roach has trained from the ground up and made them better.
He turned a physically gifted fighter and turned him into nothing ... Pac is still one dimensional he became p4p champion because he's been winning.
beristain implemented the wrong weight strategy for dlh to make 147 for the pac fight. he made dlh make 147 too early with still one month to go before the fight. he virtually shrunk dlh from a natural 154-lb fighter to a small welter for that fight.
He stated that because he's overrated himself ... he knows he's not on the level of other trainers ... I never heard during a fight "Roach has truly made this fighter better, every since he's trained such and such"
I disagree that Manny was the finished product when Roach got him. He had the raw attributes, which any boxer needs, but Roach refined him and turned him into a technically elite fighter. Without Roach, Manny would still be a gung-ho slugger; with him, he's a tricky, slick fighter with excellent movement and perfect timing, and he goes in the ring with the right strategy. I respect Roach, but he seems to have turned into a bit of an arsehole recently - with the whole Floyd Mayweather Senior banter and the disparaging of Hatton etc.
