Look down the bottom of this interview when he is asked about Calzaghe, I am not a boxing historian so Buncey may well be right.

For those of you who know more about the history of British Boxing, what do you make of Buncey's comments?

ESB: Joe Calzaghe has now retired from boxing. Do you think his legacy is really solidified in the history of the sport?

SB: What he has got over every single fighter is that he has done it for years and years. Was he better than John Conteh – no, or Barry McGuigan – no. But he’s been at the top for much longer.

He did it for 10 years at the top. He beat a bunch of top fighters and a bunch of lousy fighters. He did it for year after year after years. There are half a dozen fighters better than Joe [in British history] but haven’t done it for as long as Joe. You can’t judge greatness on one fight.

ESB: Who’s the greatest fighter in British history?

SB: Joe Calzaghe, his longevity gives him the nod.

2nd would be [Prince] Naseem Hamed – just fell short against Barrera.

Is this what you're referring to? Well, Calzaghe is in the top 3 for me (no.3) but not even mentioning Buchanan and Lewis is a joke.....how can he not be as good as John COnteh but the best ever?????

McGuigan is overrated, he's talking out of his arse there.

Or are you referring to the fact that he said Conteh was better? What part are you disputing? I'm not sure where you stand on Joe C due to your avatar :good

He could be querying any number of things, couldn't he? It's a nonsense statement.

Calzaghe is miles better than McGuigan, but he's nothing like the best ever. Top 5 on a good day.

Conteh was better though. Calzaghe wouldn't have lasted the distance with Saad even once

Both at their peak, I'd take Calzaghe. Good fighter though as was Honeyghan. There has been loads of great British fighters not just Lewis and Calzaghe like most people seem to think. As for who was the pinnacle is always gonna be debatable.

Interesting what Conteh says about his lifestyle, Ricky Hatton take note.

    Is Calzaghe Britain's best ever?

Is Hamed Britain's 2nd best ever?

Were Conteh + McGuigan better / equal to Calzaghe?

why no british love for lennox lewis?

he would have beaten any heavy in history, maybe not the greatest though if that makes sense.

Big george thinks this too. granted he is nuts.

buchanan as well. back in the day there was only one champ per division and he won it in puerto rico against all odds and was a big big name in america.......and he gave duran (greatest lightweight ever and p4p 1 ) a great fight

    No

    Resounding No

    No / Hell No!

I disagree with everything Buncey said. I think what he was trying to get at is that Calzaghe achieved more than Conteh, but Conteh was the more talented. I wouldn't agree either, and there were more talented fighters than Conteh such as Ken Buchanan and Randy Turpin.

If Lewis doesn't count as British, which I say he does, then Buchanan is no.1

Best ever I would have to say Lennox Lewis. Calzaghe was never sparked out like Lewis but didn't face the same amount of top level opponents so my nod would go to him. He feared nobody and always took on the very best. Furthermore when his mind and and body were working in sync nobody stood a chance.

Maybe Buncey is discounting Lewis coz he was born in Jamaica. In which case Honeyghan and maybe more would be disqualified as well.
