I thought so as well. But if the question is who was the best middleweight of the 1980s, the answer is Hagler.
Come on guys, pointing out the obvious or what! Why don't we just ask what Cassius Clay changed his name to! Haha, im kidding.
Since Duran was nearing 40 and fighting two classic divisions above his natural weight I have to give it to him. He also won by a slightly wider margin IMO. While an argument can be made for Hagler winning it would be strange indeed saying the same about Barkley. Duran won that one, no arguments. Duran's win over Barkley may very well be the best in boxing history. It's just tremendous. I just can't understand how he managed to turn that one around. Barkley was hitting him with some vicious shots during the first 8, but still Duran had more gas down the stretch. A 37-year old former LW has no business taking those body shots from a MW puncher and ending the fight as he did. Unreal.
I watched the Hagler - Leonard fight live in closed circuit. I felt the feeling in the theatre was that Leonard had won it well. He made it look like he'd fought the fight on his terms. It was much closer when I watched it again but watching it live was a different thing. I think McIlvanney called it "an illusion".
Last time i viewed i i thought it was a draw personally, but i thought it was very possible to give some of them rounds either way. I did think to myself though that i was a judge at the fight i would edge towards Leonard more so than Hagler.
