Chavez is criminally underrated on ESB, has been for yrs.

I have him in my personal top 10 - now watch the wolves come feast on my blood for uttering such blasphemy here on classic.

 

That is complete bull****. Their career paths were nothing at all alike, so a direct comparison like that is just ******ed, for lack of a better word. The only thing that is more than obvious is that Canzoneri faced and beat far better competition than Chavez could've ever hoped to. Not to mention, he did it fighting at an even higher rate than Chavez did, and didn't pad his record with junkyard bums in between title fights, but world class fighters.

Again, their career paths were nothing at all alike, and your trying to draw parallels that favor Chavez is just making you look foolish. Your second paragraph is a prime example. Canzoneri didn't dominate the period as Chavez did his because he was facing a MUCH higher level of competition much more consistently. Period.

 

I'm not remotely qualified to get involved in this discussion (only been into boxing for a couple of years and seen very little), but I wanted to ask this, anyway and seeing as the thread is kind of relevant to it, I will...

Do you guys think there's flaws in comparing resume between boxers of the kind of era where you'd have 20 fights a year and the modern one? To me, that would suggest that lesser preperation/greater attrition would lead to losing to worse fighters on an off day, or beating a better fighter on one of their off days far more. Whereas nowadays it's far more meticulous and bouts are probably a greater reflection of who the better fighter is. But like I say, no expert.

Am I the only one surprised to see Roy Jones Jr ahead of the likes of Joe Gans, Jimmy Wilde, Gene Tunney in some list ?

Not it terms of p4p ranking and Gans should certinly be higher still can't get over you having Walcott below 40.:shock:

 

i checked my list and i have walcott at 36...tunney and jones are about in the same league. i have no problem who ranks higher so long as they are not 5 spots apart

 

Sweet Pea doesn't have Walcott in his top 100 believe it or not

Barbados was the one they Minotauro and Asero were arguing about. There's absolutely no argument that anyone, anywhere can make that would have Jersey Joe Walcott in the top 40 P4P fighters of all time.
