Sparring is by far the most important part of your training. I don't get gyms that keeps sparring to a minimum. You can hit all the mitts, bags, speedball, run 100 miles, skip for hours and do 1000 crunches but all those are just supplements to sparring. Sparring is your preview to fighting.

Adapting to different styles, gauging the range, learning to take a shot and carry on with business rather than being shocked, timing your punches and controlling your stamina to last the full rounds. All those things I realised when I first started sparring and all of them I'm still learning.

How'd it turn out, tm? Very intimidating, putting a 16-year-old in against a 30-year-old grown man.

I remember one card when Tukunbo Oliajide(ESPN) was fighting, a former Atlantic City Casino body guard who was like 6'6 260 was fighting a white guy who used to box early in life, and then played football for Nebraska I believe. Once his career was over, he decided to get back into boxing.

The 6'6 kid came out swinging, and even caught the football player with a grazing shot, and the football player went down mon a knee. He got up and when the unschooled guy came at him, he hit the 6'6 dude with a right hand that had him down and almost out. The 6'6 guy got up and was nodding his head... nope, he didn't hurt me to the crowd. After that, the football player landed jabs and body punches that had the 6'6 goon Swaing like a boat in a storm. A left hook I believe flattened the guy who fell on his face. It was lovely to see a guy think he could put on a pair of gloves and beat een a low level fighter who had experienced boxing before.
