Irish Boxing

10 April 2009 - By Neil Sinclair It looks like I will be fighting Henry Coyle for the Irish light-middleweight title on the undercard of Martin Rogan’s Commonwealth title defence against Sam Sexton at the Odyssey in March.
I have to say I am delighted and I think it will be a brilliant fight for the fans. I have been training hard now for the last four weeks including plenty of good sparring and running. I haven’t fought in a while but I don’t think that is going to be a problem because I really haven’t been out of the gym and I feel like I’ve shook off the injuries I had last year.
The fact that the fight is in the Odyssey brings back good memories for me having beaten Bradley Pryce there in a British title defence a few years back. Come May 15 I’ll be the only boxer to have fought there twice as a professional. I’m excited about that.
I know most people have fond memories of the Kings Hall but I’ve fought there a few times and actually only won once - because I got cut a couple of times. But I have special memories of the Odyssey and hopefully can build upon that on May 15.
This has the makings of a great fight. I won’t go in there looking for a war, but I realise it could turn into a war. I’m better when I’m boxing behind my jab but I’m prepared to go in to the trenches.
Topping the bill is Martin Rogan. Martin is an inspiration to anyone – not just those involved in boxing. We went for a coffee last year – just before Prizefighter. Before that he wasn’t getting a look-in. He wasn’t getting the fights or the press. You could see it was frustrating him because he was absolutely raring to go. So he took the chance when he got it and hasn’t looked back. He’s having the first defence in the Odyssey and it is great for him. It will be interesting seeing just how far he can go.
Before all that I will be going to a couple of bills in the Ulster Hall. I have to say, as a venue I love the Ulster Hall. I won my first Ulster Senior title there. I made my pro debut there and I had a few other fights there.
It’s been closed for a couple of years so I’m looking forward to the Ulster Seniors on the 23rd and then going to watch Martin Lindsay’s fight against Paul Appleby a couple of days later.
A friend of mine Stephen Kirk has a lad on in the finals from Cairn Lodge and then there are a couple of lads from my old club Monkstown in action as well. So I’ll be on the edge of my seat.
I also think Lindsay can pull it off. I saw his last fight and he ended that with one punch. But Appleby is good and it could be one of the best fights seen in Belfast in years.
Finally, I was down in the O2 for Bernard Dunne’s fight with Ricardo Cordoba and it was just a fabulous occasion. Last month I said I thought he could win and he didn’t disappoint me. He dug deep and he deserved it and fair play to him - he is WBA champion which I always felt was the best of all the titles.

 

If Sinkys conditioning is right and he doesnt get in to tear up with Coyle he will win this easy.This is a real old fashion cross roads fight and a good bout for both boxers.

 

I would tend to agree, but Coyles youth and workrate could make this a real 50-50 fight.:yep

oh yeah my news..... sweet pea ohara could fight eddie hyland in a rematch for the irish title at the odyssey...if not kevin will fight for the celtic title instead

 

I'm a huge fan of Sinky. Always an entertaining lad and someone I have enjoyed watching for a long time. I'd be more of a fan of his than Coyle anyway.

That said, I just feel a win will do more for Coyle than it will for Sinky. Whats Sinky now? 35-36? Even if he wins his options will be limited.

Coyle will get more value out of a win I think. For that reason I'd probably like to see him edge this one. However, in my heart of hearts, I know I'll be hoping Sinky does the business

What happend with Coyles one loss? TKO after 29 seconds? Walked onto something massive right away and was out of it when he got to his feet?

Possibly the best thing for him, he's so wild, open and aggressive I can't imagine what he fought like before he got sparked. He probably learned a lot more from that fight, than he did from his 2 fights before that.

Sinclair v Coyle is a very interesting match up, obviously Sinclair is technically superior, he's also the harder puncher too but he always has that vulnerability to his chin and he's not that quick anymore. With the way Coyle fights I can see a knock out, either he'll outwork and grind down Sinclair, or his technical flaws will be brutally exploited.

As crude and poor as he is(and no offence meant he's pretty poor at the moment for the hype he got in the past) I think Coyle will pull this one out and it's a real step up in class like this that he needs.


Also bit if a shock in Ukraine tonight, well I say bit of a shock probably a massive shock. Nikita Lukin who embarrisningly gave Paulie Hyland hell in his last fight has just won a Unanimous decision over Stanislav Merdov.
Merdov was most likely being groomed for an all Ukraine European Featherweight title fight(similar to the all Ukraine WBA Welterweight title fight they had tonight) but Lukin beat him 98-93, 96-93, 97-95.

Merdov has wins over former Bernard Dunne opponents Yuri Vornonin and Yersin Jailouev. He was ranked #1 in Europe(although not the next mandatory, the EBU don't list the mandatory in the ratings)

£33 a ticket is very good value - shaping up to be a decent bill.

I would like to see Coyle take this as well. 1. for a little bit of regional variety which is healthy for the sport, 2. because every dog has its day and Sinclair has had his and hopefully Coyles is coming.
