No not his punching power but his star power. I worked the Mayweather fight back in Dec of 07 and I saw how his fans took over the stadium, it had to be about 10,000 of them at least, screaming and chanting and cheering. For the few people who don't know this Las Veges is an expensive place, his fans had to get hotel rooms, eat in expensive areas, and pay for their plane tickets ( not to mention the fight tickets). The trip over had to be a big hit on the wallet yet he still brought that many people over here. Let's take our biggest fighters in history ( starpower ) De La Hoya and Tyson, if they went to fight in Europe ( at peak ) how many fans from the US would have followed them ( 100, 200 tops ), I wish I had that kind of power for just once in my life.
Yea but most Phillapino's can't pay for the trip over, Pac may have a couple hunder come over max, the rest will be the one's that live in this country ( Vegas to be honest )
30,000 brits went over for the mayweather fight even tho most knew they couldnt get in, but dont expect anywhere near as much for may 2nd with the credit crunch and all, maybe about 10,000 will go over
I am not a Brit but I have some questions and they are not SARCASTIC 1. Why is Hatton more popular than Calzaghe??? ( I am aware of Welsh, English and Scottish 2. If David Haye had a big match here would the Brits follow hims as well
1. Dont know. Obvious answer is Rickys just "one of the lads" - likes to go out and get smashed. Whereas Calzaghe shied away from any spotlight, kept himself to himself. I think it runs a lot deeper than that, but im way to tired to go there :deal 2. To an extent, but not as much as Hatton. Hatton is a weird comodity. He's by FAR the most popular fighter for Brits in years. Brits are really particular about who they chose for their hero. The last boxer to have this much love was Frank Bruno.
hatton is popular with sports fans not just boxing fans as he keeps saying " im a man of the people" and " im just a normal bloke" and i guess fans buy into that and hes a huge fan of manchester city football club and a lot of manchester city fans have become hatton fans because of this ,plus he always puts it all on the line and comes to fight. haye will get a lot of brit follow him to germany but nothing compared to hatton, a rough guess id say 3000 or 4000 will go that the haye fight in june
Ricky is def a 10 in star power. The reason us Brits prefer Ricky is he is English so all the English follow him more so than Calzaghe... personally i don't say i'm British i say i'm English so it is a bit of nationalism. But what Ricky also has is that likability factor same as Pacman. He's humble and down to earth and always gives time for his fans... not to mention his wicked sense of humour. It also helps that for years when he was fighting at domestic level he was by far the most exciting fighter to watch
Shut the **** up. Rickys loved up here in Scotland as well as Wales and Ireland so dont go spouting that bull****
As someone mentioned earlier, Hatton is a Man City fan and basically when Hatton fought in Manchester he filled stadiums with Man City fans and because his fights were exciting and he fought at 100% throughout he built a really strong fan base who would travel to watch him anywhere. I was at the fight vs PBF and it was an awesome atmosphere even when he lost most of the crowd stayed in cheering for Hatton... I don't know how many boxers have fans who would do that. Calzaghe pretty much fought in front of 6000 people when in cardiff, at the ice rink so didn't build as big a fan base and only started building it recently when fighting in big stadiums. He is a bit shy, doesn't talk with the press as much as Hatton does. Although I went to see him in Vegas and NY and he took a decent amount of fans, probably more than any other fighter (not including Hatton) could take around the world. In answer to question 2, the british fans haven't really taken to David Haye, he barely sells out over here let alone taking people around the world. Hatton could sell out fighting anyone, David Haye would have to be fighting a top fighter to sell out. Against Enzo, it was about 50% Haye fans 50% Enzo fans and being that it was Haye's home town it shows you he doesn't have that big a support.
