It seems like the crowds aren't responding particularly well to him and I can't understand why. In my eye's he brings top notch entertainment value not only with his stature and punch output, but also with his natural charisma. The guy wears his smile after throwing 10 punches and when after getting tagged. I can't imagine how the boos could have been warranted after his exciting destruction of Winky. Thoughts
he is now in the box seat the likes of Pavilk,AA and strum will run like thieves from this guy, but HBO will bank roll williams and they will put the big money from williams fights now
pretty much, Winky is a popular guy amongst fight fans. He showed class as always, even tonight in defeate
Maybe in that Professor Chaos says he's a villain. Winky is kind of an adopted fighter in NV so chances are he'd get booed. I'd be worried about the fact that the crowd was blacked out for the most part. Never a good sign.
I was hoping that I was wrong on that... could only see out to the 2nd row. atsch Wow, that's really bad!
Williams suffers from a condition that a lot of top tier boxing talents do - no marketing. ZERO. If you're a guy like Williams, unless you come from a town that adopts you, ala Juan Diaz or Fernando Guerrero, you have little chance of becoming a mainstream star unless you have a great marketing team behind you.
HBO will certainly continue to push for him, however promoters and fighters are going to have to step up particular Arum who has refused to deal with him. Anyways I hope crowds start taking to him because he truly is a great fighter who fights with pure energy.
Do you think a change in promoters would do him well? Could a pairing with Don King and PTP conquer the world?
Honestly, it could help, but the promoters have so little to do with actually marketing the fighters themselves. They care about the fights. The events. Not the fighters. Most of them, at least. I just started a boxing related business a few months ago and I'm amazed by some of what I'm seeing. That's not to say there aren't some good guys out there, but I could tell you a story about the guy who handles the marketing for the guy in your avatar that would make you laugh.
No. Don King has really fallen backwards in terms of relevancy. GBP is the person he needs. Goosen does well but he's not the sort of guy who goes out of his way with marketing.
Agree completely. GBP at least is heading in the right direction, in terms of marketing. Plus, they're starting to lock up a lot of the top guys which should allow entertaining fights to be made a little more easily.
I mentioned King because PTP would instantly become his flagship fighter. Golden Boy is the much better company but they are so stacked with talent that I would wonder if they would push him the way he ought to be.
