I was wrong about this fight to say the least. Once Paul knew that Winky had no power it was over. Winky didn't open up the way he should have when he got inside, didn't invest enough time in William's body, and looked like a beaten man by the 7th round. A lot of the reason why Winky couldn't get off though was due to Paul's intelligent clinching, awkward angles, and alien like volume of punch output. I also gotta say that Paul's speed looks vastly improved from what I've seen when he was at welterweight. It looks like those who say he was weight drained against Quintana were right. The guy isn't the fastest guy out there, but he has enough speed to trouble most opponents and this is multiplied by the fact that he throws 5-6-7 punches at a time. And what's even more impressive is that his punches are not piddy paddy punches, but it appears as if almost every one that he throws has a little on it. Very impressive. The way he was moving around the ring and the fact that he was getting hit less than his previous fights and using his jab and his reach to his advantage shows that he has improved significantly. The uppercut that he has is equally impressive because it is very unusual to see a tall man throw a good uppercut like that which means problems for shorter fighters that have a hard enough time getting inside due to Paul's reach, volume and noticably improved handspeed. I'm not completely sold on his chin, and he does get hit flush sometimes on the inside, but I've never seen him seriously hurt, (exhausted, beat up, and mentally tired against Quintana the first time, but never hurt). His power isn't great, but it was good enough to make Winky tenative. But other than the fact that he sometimes engages in places where he shouldn't and his power isn't top notch, I don't see many problems in his game at this point. Really, right now, I gotta say that it's a tossup for him and anyone from 160 and below. To me Sturm doesn't stand much of a chance as Paul is just as quick on his feet if not quicker, combined with the fact that Sturm is shorter and doesn't have a punch. Pavlik is a very dangerous fight for Paul if Paul gets tagged, but Paul is slicker than Pavlik and the number of punches he throws will make it difficult for Pavlik to land cleanly, of course combined with the angles that Paul gives Pavlik. If Pavlik doesn't win this fight by KO it could very well and likely go Paul's way. Abraham poses possibly a stiffer challange, but his entire gameplan is based around his punch, which isn't always going to land. Abraham doesn't move his head that much, isn't too fast on his feet, (doesn't close the distance any faster than Wright nor does he have Wright's accuracy). Paul could play it safe and outbox Abraham at a distance, but Paul would have to keep his defense sharp and not get into a brawl because a solid and flush punch from Abraham appears to be able to floor about any man in the middleweight division. At 154, perhaps Vernon Forrest will give Paul some trouble with his speed and accuracy, but Paul appears to be faster than Vernon at this stage and again Paul's volume will likely overwhelm Forrest and win him the fight. Kirkland could give Paul problems, but Kirkland is like a minature Arreola, but with less of an offensive arsenal. He's a guy with a good chin that will take a ton of damage to land a hard punch, but Kirkland is not a good fighter by any means. He's a tough guy with a punch, and Paul should be able to win this fight on skill alone, using his hook to hook off an oncoming Kirkland, keepin Kirland tenative with his speed and volume, and moving every time Kirkland gets close. Actually, Kirkland has no chance. I'm overrating this guy way too much. Mosley? Don't think so. Anybody at welter? Honestly, I doubt it. Paul has a great uppercut for a man his size, and I don't think Cotto gets low enough to avoid it. Besides, Cotto gets wobbled all the time and will likely find himself caught up against the ropes at some point where Paul will finish him off. I give Paul props. He proved me wrong. His stamina and punchoutput is superhuman.
Good post but I don't think Paul has vastly improved. He is improving steadily given his stepping up in comp. Paul has been vastly underrated by most...I think because of how awkward he looks being so lanky. Paul has always shown to have very good boxing skills and also very dynamic. I think many fail to realise just how soild Paul is more recently because of his loss to Qintana. Paul had an off night and proved that in the rematch.
I remember posting on your thread that paul is the real deal. He have ALWAYS fought the way he did and thats why I bet on him always. Even after he loss to quintana, i still instantly bet on him on the rematch bc i know that he underestimated carlos and wouldn't punish him on rematch. We tried to warn you about the beating that winky was going to get.
All Williams got going for him is his youth. The moment he gets to his early 30s, we will not be even be talking about him. He is not particularly skilled, nor is he a powerful puncher or a defensive wiz. He just throws enormous amount of punches because he is young and fit. He he gets older his stamina will deteriorate especailly that he will most likely move up to higher weight.
I agree with that. Wright's uncharacteristic inability to answer back and counterpunch was a fatal flaw against someone with the style of Paul Williams. As I said in another thread; even a fighter as painfully slow and clunky and flawed defensively as Antonio Margarito was able to have a counterpunching festival against Williams. People can draw their own conclusions, but there wasn't alot of difference between this Paul Williams and any other version of him that we've seen thus far.
lol...Yea, No skills at all! :rofl The head movement, upperbody movement, angles, lateral moment, Counter punching and ring generalship was all in everyone's imagination. He's not a power puncher but he's definitely got pop. And if he hits you right you'll go down from 147 to 160 as he's proven with his KO ratio. If he looses his stamina when he gets older that is to be expected. So you really aren't enlighting anyone with your post. Eventually everyone dies too.
Spit out his nuts just for a minute so you can understand what I'm saying. Yes all fighters loses stamina as they get older but either they have power or skills to make up for it. Williams got none. So by the time he reaches 33 and settles at LHW, he is nothing special.
