The 'what fights did you watch today?' thread

Just watched two of the greatest wins in British boxing history.

Jose Napoles v John H. Stracey- Very good fight. Napoles won the first 2 rounds, dropping Stracey in the 1st but Stracey was still landing his fantastic jab in these rounds. It wasn't a rangefinder or pawing jab but one that was delivered with intent and was constantly thudding into Napoles' face.

Stracey was awarded a KD in the 3rd but it seemed a bit dodgy to me :think. By now the jabs had really taken effect and Napoles was cut around one eye and the other was nearly swollen shut. Then in the 6th Stracey finished Napoles off in clinical style. A beautiful right hand against the ropes seriously hurt Napoles and Stracey moved in for the kill. Stracey picked his punches perfectly, not wasting one, and forced the referee to step in and stop the contest with Napoles somehow still on his feet.


Sugar Ray Robinson v Randy Turpin I- Arguably the greatest victory ever by a British fighter. Robinson was 128-1-2 coming in and whilst Turpin himself had an impressive record of 40-2-1 he was only 23 years old and had NEVER been past 8 rounds :shock:

The fight itself was very scrappy but Turpin fought a perfect fight. He didn't allow Robinson to settle at all and was not fazed at all by the great champion. There was a LOT of holding with quite a bit of it instigated by Turpin who landed his own punches and tied Robinson up.

I wasn't scoring this fight properly but I'd say Robinson won no more that 4 or 5 rounds out of the 15. And as I mentioned above, Turpin had never been past 8 rounds!!!
